This discussion has me thinking about a possible partial solution. After a little thought I have decided to print some card-stock signs on the computer to attach to several of the SPT's that say "CHECK SPEED SETTING". Size will likely vary by SPT and I will try to keep it all neat looking. The bandsaw sign would be maybe a 3"X5" unruled index card. Its not that I tend to be absent minded but I do lose a lot of time standing in a room wondering why I went there...
I think that will work for me since I do work carefully and do look thoroughly at any installation but might forget a detail. Now, what was I talking about??? Oh, Yeah... Having the main tools on mini's or a power-stand would also probably help where there is room.
BTW, I also seldom crank down the speed unless I know that I will be changing a set-up or the speed is sat extra high.

I did not equip with Shopsmiths in spite of the setups but because of them.
1 1988 - Mark V 510 (bought new), 4 Poly vee 1 1/8th HP Mark V's, Mark VII, 1 Mark V Mini, 1 Frankensmith, 1 10-ER, 1 Mark V Push-me-Pull-me Drillpress, SS bandsaw, belt sander, jointer, jigsaw, shaper attach, mortising attach, TS-3650 Rigid tablesaw, RAS, 6" long bed jointer, Foley/Belsaw Planer/molder/ripsaw, 1" sander, oscillating spindle/belt sander, Scroll saw, Woodmizer sawmill
Looks like shopsmith will have to come out with V2.0 of the power pro with an sensor that detects which SPT is attached and automatically set the speed for you.
As a retrofit to the older machines would be a sensor that you attach to the SPT and to the power cord so you would have to check the speed dial then push a button before it would power up. As a secondary safety measure a sensor mounted on the output shaft would check the speed before it would allow you to engage the new power coupler.
Lets see new power coupler $300, SPT sensor $200, control box $800, yep that is about right.
Then the new power pro would go up by $2000 and include a static free AM/FM radio and not allow the use of the table saw function (safety first friend) but would have a wireless connection to a wood working establishment that you would give the measurements to for the wood you can no longer cut... Wood plus delivery would automatically be charged to your shopsmith american express card. Six to 8 weeks later your wood arrives and there you go, on to the sanding, drilling and you will be finished in no time. By the way Christmas wood orders need to be in by May 1 for deliver at Thanksgiving.
Well either that or put up with remembering to do it on your own. It has worked for me so far.

Sorta like the 'make sure the headstock is locked down before raising to vertical' scenario.
It only takes one forgetful incident to permanently instill the prudence of checking before lifting.

OK another thing for V2.0, tilt warning system, followed by a detector to make sure you have it locked in its upright position before take off, I mean use.
Maybe it should also have a warning that the landing gear is down so it will not roll now that it moves so easy with the new tires????
Just thinking here. No seriously, wouldn't want to have the machine move while you are trying to rip a board or something, that sounds like a real problem that should be solved. I can see people forgetting and not pulling up the landing gear... Should be able to sell one of these attachments for say $50.
No, no, you're thinking too high-tech. You just need a bunch of those red tags the maintenance guys use on the flightline to show the ac isn't ready for launch. Through normal government procurement channels, they shouldn't cost more than $200 apiece.
Several reasons I decided on small signs.
Super cheap.
Super simple.
Easy to replace if worn or damaged.
It is not forced protection.
No electronics.
No batteries.
The constant exposure is like a subliminal message and prone to make my mind more observant and not create a false sense of security thinking I am protected.
Actually while I will put the little signs on it I don't really see me just flipping on the switch the first time after a setup without checking every thing and keeping my finger on the switch until every thing is going. I just don't work like that after a lifetime of running very large, very unforgiving machinery where sloppiness is easily fatal.

Farmer--I'm with you completely. Joking aside, my boat's ignition key is on a homemade (by me) fob in the shape of a stopsign with the instructions to turn on the blower (to remove gasoline fumes) and open the seacock (to allow seawater for cooling) before starting. Safety is serious business.

Many RV owners keep a spring clothespin on their flip up TV antenna while it is down and place it on their steering wheel, shifter or keys when they raise it up. Without the simple marker many of them were being "lowered" harshly by tree limbs as they drove away.
