Resawing novice seeks tips

I'm a complete novice at resawing. I had great luck (beginner's luck I guess) resawing some poplar with the 1/2 inch blade that came with the bandsaw. Then I put a new Bosch 1/4 inch, 6 TPI blade on the saw to do some curvy stuff, and when I later wanted to resaw some oak, I thought I'd just leave the 1/4 inch blade in place. The result was disappointing:

To complete the experiment, I need to try the same wood with the 1/2 inch blade. Right now the variables are:

1) poplar vs. oak
2) 1/2 inch blade vs 1/4 inch blade
3) sled vs. fence

Any opinions out there?

For resawing: Wider blade is better. Fewer teeth/inch is better. Deeper gullets is better. Skip tooth helps. Slower feed is better.
