New Owner/ member Intro

Hey gang looks like a great site and I am very glad I found it. I am a retired Navy man with 2 completed home restorations in his past and working on my third and last one now. I have most of the common table top stuff but Mom emailed me last week and asked if I wanted Dad's old Mark V and naturally I said yes. So After Christmas we tore it down and put it in the truck for the ride back to Norfolk. I have yet to reassemble it.

Dad is pretty meticulous so I got everything it came new with including the receipts back in December of 82. It has very little use and is in generally excellent condition. I seriously doubt if the head stock has 50 hours on it.

The receipt says I got the Mark V Plus, Starter Accessory Prepak, Handyman Prepak, and Craftsman's Accessories (Pkg 3). Not sure what all that means but Dad had it pretty well organized so I suspect I got it all.

We ran it and it seems to operate just fine.

So my starting out questions are is there anything specific I should address before I reassemble this and start using it? Like critical lubrication points or bearings that need cleaned or anything like that? So far it seems like I only have one real maintenance issue I am aware of. Somewhere we lost the two adjuster set screws for the rip fence so I will be looking for replacement for those.

Welcome to the forum. If you look at the New Owner Info in the Maintenance and Repair section of the forum, you should find the information you need to get started.

Those fence screws you mentioned are merely for offsetting the fence when using the fence in connection with the sanding disk for edge sanding. They aren't used for aligning the fence for ripping. Check the owners manual for aligning the fence for ripping.

1) Never Never Never rotate the speed control knob without the shafts turning.

2) There are those of us here that recommend removing those set screws to preclude them moving and causing unintentional mis-alignment of the fence. Apparently your dad was in agreement. A 5/16-18 flat or domed set screw is easily obtained locally(or a cup face modified) when the need 'arises'.

One more question for now, I was perusing EBay and saw a custom built cabinet system under a Mark V that could be used to store all the bits and pieces. My Shop is used for a lot of things (mostly Motorcycles) and I am afraid I will have to keep this stuff organized or it may get lost in the shuffle.

So is there a collection of or a place to look at designs of different cabinet systems guys have built over the years specifically for the SS??

Exactly what I needed! I have to build something to keep this thing organized or the pieces parts are going to end up scattered all over the shop,
likely never to be seen again:rolleyes:

Be especially careful with hubs. When dropped they roll out of sight! Just ask Ed!;)

That is Outstanding!! I have a bunch of books including what looks to be his lesson guide from a class he attended but I do not have an actual owners manual. I presume that covers the different setups and that is what I need. I know most are pretty simple but a "configuration guide" would be helpful.
