This little marquetry box was built with my 510 and with the chevalet, drum sander and veneer press that I built with my 510 so I guess it's a ShopSmith project through and through. It was originally meant to be a box that you could reverse inside out to make two different boxes each the negative of the other. As I was building it however I realized that you can actually disassemble it and reassemble it in 32 different configurations. To reverse it there is a little bent handle on one hinge pin. To make the others you would have to remove the other pins. It has no real use. I was just fooling around.

Hold on there Paul. You left out the part about how you drilled for the hinge pin.

Looks like you kerf-ed for the hinge pin, great idea. I've done hinges but was always restricted by the drilling to about 10". This really opens things up.

I like this intricate work. I notce the same design on the end of your box as many 1800 pieces. That is a classic old flower opening design on the end. Love that old world charm. As far as the bow, did you use sand shading to give the shadows?

holsgo Yes, the designs on both the ends and front are classics. The flower motif on the ends is called an anthemion and dates back to Egyptian and Greek design. And yes again, the bow is sand shaded, as are the anthemion motifs.

I never knew the name for that design. Thanks for the tip. I do see it often on many pieces. The sand shading is cool. I've tried it on the classic fans but I need to work on it more. What did you use as a filler between the inlays?
