Contol Sheave is stuck

Thx to JPG40504 for the reference to SS academy, I now know how to somewhat replace my Control Sheave.....Let me explain.

After removing the drive belt I have found that the Control Sheave won't budge. It is supposed to slide back and forth, allowing for easy removal; well mine is completely stuck! At least I think... I'm trying to avoid having to remove the Idler Shaft assembly to find out for sure.

Any suggestions? Do I have to replace the entire Idler Shaft Assembly now?
I'm thinking worst case scenario that I might have to pull out the idler shaft and gently tap the Control sheave loose..?? I really don't want to replace the whole thing.

If it is that 'stuck', you really need to take it all out to adequately clean it up.

More that likely light tapping will not get it loose. It is easier to exert more controlled/directed/forceful pushing with it in hand.

I would also take the idler shaft sheave off the shaft also to get it all ungummed. The key is not removable unless the idler sheave is removed first(it holds the key captive).

The control sheave does not have any good places to apply force without potentially warping it. In your case it will be discarded?

Since I'm new to SS. I decided to pull the head stock apart as is shown on the SS Academy video. I'm glad I did, because I can really see now how this thing works. I haven't got the Control sheave loose yet, but so far it looks like the only thing that needs replaced.

My SS Mark V is working superbly!:)
I took it all apart yesterday, I mean everything... pulled the motor from the case, took Idler assembly off, drive belt, Drive sleeve, quil , poly v belt.
I them inspected and cleaned and lubed everything.

I sprayed stuck Control sheave with WD40 between the sheaves(control/Idler), let it sit for 10min, tapped on them a bit and they came loose... I got lucky!
I then put it all back together in reverse order with my new Control sheave in place.

Well didn't mean to get long winded, all I will say is that I'm sure glad for the SS academy video that JPG40504 refered me too.

If you have never taken your SS apart, I'd recommend doing it just for the education.
