Quill is frozen on old Mark V

Remove the Quill. Tighten the quill return spring 3 turns by rotating the handle (the one you don't have:o ), hold the handle (again the one you don't have:o ), put the quill back in the hole and engage it into the return mechanism, slowly let the quill retract. Put the Quill out about an inch or two, hold this position while you tighten the set screw on top only until it holds the quill in place, slowly losen the set screw until the quill retracts on its own. Your all done and Bob's your uncle:D

Make sure that set screw on top of the headstock is 'in the groove when you tighten then loosen it.

Hey guys,

Now, when I got to my quill I ran into 2 problems. One, is that I don't have a Quill Feed Hub, so I can't use a handle to turn the quill.[/B] All I can do it grab where the handle would go with a pipe wrench and try to turn it.

Do you still need a hub? Can't have ya pipe wrenchin' that poor thing.

Well, I got it all re-assembled, but of course there's an all new issue. I made a makeshift handle from a different handle I had on another shopsmith accessory, but when I rotate the handle forward to get that spring tension it goes about half way around and then doesn't want to go any further. When I initially undid that set screw to remove the pinon shaft I heard the spring and shaft go spinning so I hope that something didn't go wrong when that happened. If I rotate it backwards it just feels like it gets a little bit of tension and then releases in a half turn. Thoughts?

sounds like the spring has become unclipped off the nail and is just binding inside.
Gotta re-do it.

You can borrow the handle and hub from the carriage till you get a replacement.
