I guess there's more than one way to skin a cat.
Actually, when you think about it, with whatever design flaws or inadequacies these things may have, they get a lot of use & last a long time & most probably don't get the regular lubing that they should have... and then some of us add a washer here or a screw there & they're probably good for more years than some of us will ever get.

I'd like to thank Bill Mayo for sending me the a new bolt, nylon lock nut, and washers. I got home from a trip Sunday night, and found it in my mail. It is installed now!
Today was only the second time I had removed the speed changer. This is a pretty big step for me, as I am new to the Shopsmith. I appreciate everyones help, and also recognize the Shopsmith folks who are doing a real service to us owners by hosting the forum, and encouraging this environment.
