Will I will be 64 in May, got my first SS in 94 from the demo at the Old East Land Mall in Tulsa before it shut down. Then got hooked on old ERS and starting rebuilding them so now I have a 510, 520 4 ER and most all of the SPT out there except the Planer, Love to do mainly turning so do a lot of small turnings and going to start turning Wands, I am getting a lot of request from Harry Potter fans to turn wands. But if it is wood I am interested. Finally got back to work after a year and half out of work. So this year is looking up.

I am 32 and bought a 1995 model 510 with the 3300 dust collector and bandsaw last fall (2011). It is not in great shape, but I got a real good deal, and look forward to restoring back to new condition, plus it is a ball of fun to work with. My dad bad mouth's it, but I am already wanting the new mark 7, and I will own one some day.

Ask Dad how many of his 17 year old tools(I be assuming they have lasted this long and that he actually has any) are still repairable(parts are available)!

Geez, I thought I was one of the oldies (age that is) on this forum but I see now that there are 10 members over age 75. Hang in there guys, I plan on being here when I'm well into the 80s.jeff__130 wrote:I'm 29. I bought my 510 about a year ago and I've gotten quite a bit of use from it already. It was garage stored for about 10 years. Pretty amazing how well it worked considering the gentle neglect it's received.

For another month, will be 63. First Shopsmith was given to me, 1984 model with joiner, dust collector, scroll saw, and bandsaw. The provider has MS and was not able to give me all the parts, but been shopping on eBay and almost caught up. Shaper fence with no shaper head or blades. He gave me this wonderful machine about 2.5 years ago. Bought the second machine about 2 years ago and it is a 1985. Came with bandsaw, chisels, tailstock, centers, disk sander, couplers, blades and many other parts plus manuals and a copy of PTWFE. The fence doesn't like to stay square, but it's easy to adjust. Afraid to tighten to much as it is aluminum. Have made bookcases, desk, toys galore and now making pirate treasure chest. It's just as accurate as I am. Sometimes, deal with 32nds of an inch. Wanted one of these machines since I saw then in the mall demonstrations in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

I just love it when she says I can go make sawdust.

bump
figured this needed a bump, seems like we have some new people and it's interesting to see the demographics
'55 Greenie #292284 (Mar-55), '89 SS 510 #020989, Mark VII #408551 (sold 10/14/12), SS Band Saw, (SS 500 #36063 (May-79) now gone to son-in-law as of 11-11), Magna bandsaw, Magna jointer 16185 (May-54), Magna belt sander SS28712 (Dec-82), Magna jigsaw SS4397 (Dec-78), SS biscuit joiner, Zyliss (knockoff) vise, 20+ hand planes, 60s Craftsman tablesaw, CarbaTec mini-lathe, and the usual pile of tools. Hermit of the Hills Woodworks, a hillbilly in the foothills of the Ozarks, scraping by.
I just started doing a little Woodworking last summer. A friend gave me a router and I just started spending money on the the thing and the hobby. Safety gear, router bits, replace saber saw that died, etc. I then took on a couple of tasks and found that circular saw was not going to be good enough for my needs. I am very limited in the space that i have avaiabe. So I have gotten a SS 500 with standard accessories recently (march).
I retired 4 years ago and moved north for my retirement, as the wife said that is what she heard everyone did. People look at me kind of funny when I explain this. I think maybe she fibbed to me.
Ihave been enjoying reading about the #10 box project, starting with selecting and laying out the wood. I am really appreciative of the information I get here on these forums. I am cleaning the machine up now and will build skills starting with the lessons i found at the back of my manual. I do hope the other membership of the forum will be patient with me. I am looking forward to some good experiences in woodworking.
