Different uses for your ShopSmith

Maybe its because my shop is small.. or maybe its because the only major power tool I have ever owned is a shopsmith...

I recently bought a planer (Dewalt DW733) that did not come with a stand ... and I am quickly growing weary of using on the floor. Its back breaking to say the least!

Anyhow - since necessity is the mother of all invention, I decided I would use my shopsmith for a planer stand and then also use the main table and an extension table as outfeed support. Pics attached

This got me to thinking... how do you use YOUR Shopsmith (in ways it wasnt intended)

Neat idea. I've got similar issues with my DW 735. I'm going to try this for sure.

If you don't need the additional infeed/outfeed space then you might consider rotating the dw735. In doing so you could have the table saw, jointer, and planer all running simultaneously. When I was talking to mike young at one of the demos it was one of the reasons why he suggested the standalone planer was better since it was standalone.

Neat idea overall.

I also used to use my 510 doing shoe repair work at night so I wouldn't have to go back to the store at night to keep up.

When my Son was in high school, he got his hands on an old Chevy positraction differential. It was the Warner cone type posi, and it was worn to the point that it didn't work anymore. He found he could use the Shopsmith drill press with a cutting stone to mill the cone down enough to restore its function.
So, Shopsmiths don't just do wood. They can be used for car restoration too.

I have an extra Shopsmith without a headstock (legs, tubes, carriage, and table) that I plan on making a planer and miter saw stand. The planer will mount like eagleta2 has his so I can use the table for outfeed support. The miter saw will sit on the tubes so I can use the Shopsmith extension tables (and the main table) for lateral support, stop blocks, etc.

And, I've found that the best tool for restoring a Shopsmith is a Shopsmith!

I am hopefully going to build a small light duty metal milling machine out of one of my vast collection of 10E/ERs next year. I will document as I go along.

I use my "500" as a stand for my sliding miter saw. I just clamp it to the main table and use the extension tables for support. Just line everything up and go to it.
