mark V double tilt base upgrade research
With some recent discussions about upgrades I have come back here to see if I am understanding things correctly and if anyone has had hands on with these issues.
First a little trip back in time. The shopsmith years early 1970's, once again the brand new fresh shopsmiths were on the market. By 1976 I had funds to buy one and I did. I also picked up the "jig" saw and belt sander within a short time.
At that time the legs of the SPT were straight, had a depth stop ring cut into them and farther adjustment was done by where the legs needed to be adjusted for height and held in place with setscrews in/on the SPT. The other adjustment to reach the alignment was done based on adjustments of the way tubes (there by where the headstock shaft was locate) via a set screw(earlier models required possible filing of the rest area).
As time went along those straight legs were replaced with eccentric mounting tubes. Now the eccentric is used to tune the alignment.
While the vintage alignment remains in the design of the frame of the shopsmith for all these years it is now possible to upgrade the basic system to the double tilt base. When this happens you no longer have a way of making the frame portion of the adjustment, no provision was provided for that. Same if you get a new Mark 7.
I checked my SPT, both the jig saw and the beltsander I think will need new legs with the eccentric if I do the upgrade.
Using the online catalog I found that a common eccentric mounting tube is the 5137779. It is used on the bandsaw, and beltsander. The tubes on the scroll saw item #114 is not in the parts list?? Stripsander item #52 is listed as N/A (the only parts information on the stripsander says for PRE 1993). The jointer says part number 5020809.
The belt sander I am guess would work with the current listed tubes so that is fine, well not so fine they are $17.72 ea. so make that $35.44 plus shipping extra to have to pay.
Jig saw well that is another story.
Then I thought, maybe through some odd set of way the new double tilt system works with straight legged SPT.
Has anyone, anyone at all tried a straight legged STP with the double tilt???
How about with any existing SPT you have, do you need to re-adjust them after the change over/new machine??
Comments please.

A related question:
Are the bench tubes attached to the castings the same as previously.
If so, rotating the castiings is still possible(loosen the screws and twist the legs about a vertical axis).
I prefer to think of the screw as a way to parallel the way tubes with the bench tubes. Yes the screw will reposition the idler shaft, but at the expense of skewing the tubes. Lily gilding to be sure, but accurate!;)

I cannot speak to the double tilt alignment issue, but I can say that the eccentric legs from the strip sander work fine with the old style jigsaw. I ordered and installed some a while back. If necessary, I may be able to find the part number I used. (Edit: part number 5137769 @ $10.88 ea.)

I should have mentioned that I just happen to have an extra old Mark VII carriage and table system. I need to do some playing with the hitch pin tilt and the Mark VII table system on a mark V. No reverse but even that could be possible somehow.
I must confess to not being current on the table system on the new Mark-7 and how it handles the left tilt. I just know that it will cost me nothing to use a Mark VII carriage and tables.
It is not something I even need (have a good Mark VII) but just interested.

Maybe I need to revisit my second Mark VII that I have back for parts... I can't even recall why I haven't just fixed it up? Maybe something missing? I "think" it ran.
Dang lousy memory...

Table posts have rack on two sides which allows reversing the table. Puts the trunion lock on the back side, but that is the feed direction for under table rout/shaping.

I completed my double tilt upgrade last night. It was harder for me because I had just bought a 510 & it was all in pieces. So I came up with my own procedure as I took the way & bench tubes off to transport the Shopsmith. I read on one of these threads that there are two sized way tubes or way & bench tubes for the Mark V which use a larger diameter tube. I'm wondering if it is thicker as well. Anyone know? Thanx in advance.
One Greenie, Two Mark 7s,Three 510s and much more…
Thanks YOU!
I'll check into the part number tomorrow. I haven't decided if I'm going to upgrade but it nice to know I now have a path for the old jig saw.

OR
the tubes may be skewed and the screw fixes that?
If and when a demo comes to my area I'd likely go to see it in person, would answer some more of my questions I'm sure.
Chance I'll ever have the upgrade, well it could happen, maybe some day. The price for this upgrade could be in my budget unlike the PowerPro which would take my budget for about 3 years...
Tomorrow shopsmith will be loosing my money towards a Kreg Jig Master System (K4MS). I have a nice catalog from Rockler and have been thinking that this might be the right time. The $15 mail-in Rebate helps plus the 20% off. Yes there is shipping and tax but I think I'll be happy with the price.
