Hand planes

Boys...and the rare lady, I just got a box of hand planes. Some of you may know I restore old planes, sharpen the blades, fix handles etc and then put them back to work in people's hands. Well, a box of them just fell out of the sky. I have a 4,6, block with eccentric throat (high angle) a drawknife and spokeshave. Anyone interested in these before I refinish them and go to Craig's list with them? PM me if so and I'll give you the prices.
I can also do up a sharpening board for you and get a honing jig to match mine so you can never worry about resetting the angles.
Figured Id offer here before I go out to the masses....

Yeah, the are addictive but I always insist that you either know how to sharpen or get a sharpening board. If you can't sharpen then hand planes will drive you crazy.

Holsgo, what is a "sharpening board"? Can you provide some references for further reading? As you can tell, I'm a complete hand-plane rookie.

A sharpening board has blocks attached to it the denote the angle the blade will sit when mounted in the honing guide. So, there is a block for 25,28,30,35,45. When you bump the blade against the block and tighten the guide around it, the proper angle is achieved when you then place the jig and blade on the stones. The board also houses the 2 stones I use. These are trapped in a wooden box so that the stones don't move as you glide the jig and blade across them. They also trap the water which becomes a slurry mess as metal is removed from the blade.

Holsgo, thanks for the explanation and picture. If I'm understanding this correctly, you might need a different sharpening board for each honing guide, since "brand x" and "brand y" honing guides may have different geometries. Is that correct?

Is there a particular honing guide you think is better than the rest?

Yes. Each honing guide may be different. I normally search out the exact honing guide that I have for people who want this sharpening board for planes I have sharpened. Even the cheap china made honing guides can be a mm or more off which throws the geometry. That said, the cheap china honing guides for $20 on eBay work just fine for me. I would give out the block spacing for each angle but the honing guide determines the angle and I would make no promises.
