I'm no wood expert but I have some pieces of Sapele in my workshop and that's what it looks like to me.

I'm just not into imports or exotics, never have been, but if I picked that piece up in my shop I would just assume it was common black walnut...

Same here. Fairly common (still very prized) in the midwest but maybe a little less often seen in Dave's area. The grain is regular, not interlocked or anything.

Could very well be walnut.
Possibly African mahogany.

African mahogany would be fairly easy to dent by pressing with a thumbnail. Walnut, not so easy to dent, as it is a harder wood.

What a source of info and what a library of wood species ....
I have "bookmarked" that one in my woodworking resources file.

Dave, did you ever get a nice haul from the yard!!!! That should keep you busy for awhile. Hope to see pix of your products. :)

Really nice job on the shed. That would make children happy to have a playhouse. And, it will last many years. Good job!
