Shopsmith/Boat Building/Outfeed Table

While doing some research on boat building, I stumbled across the site of fellow who built his own boat and who also has a page on his Shopsmith. Among other things, there is a photo which appears to Show an outfeed table of a design I'd not seen before. Enjoy!! http://navigatorjoel.blogspot.com/2010/ ... smith.html

I don't know about the outfeed table kit but as soon as I clicked on the link I recognized the boat. I met Joel at a small boat rendezvous at Sucia Island in the San Juans last year (actually looks like that may be where the photo was taken) and saw his boat. She's a real beauty.

Son of a gun, you are right. I didn't have time to read up on the entry this AM before I posted the link, but he even says he got it off of ebay. Sooo, now we see some of the secret design details covered by the fabric in the ebay posting.

The outfeed table is functional...as long as you don't need to tilt the table or adjust table height.

If you are going to make one (and I would), there are better solutions.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that it mounted to the under side of the table, and that the support attached to the bottom of the table tube (under the carriage) so that it would go up and down with the table, and that there were pivots at the ends of the support so that it tilted with the table also.

Darn that is a long sentence, but I'm to tired to figure out how to fix it.

No, I am not certain of that. He has done too good a job concealing the attachment to the underside of the table. What I do know is that when the table height is changed, the length of that support must also change. I also know that when you tilt the table, at least one end of that support member must rotate (like an elbow joint). The angle of incident between the support arm and the table changes.

I had a long winded response in the making and then experienced a power outage so I have to start all over. This time it shall be somewhat abbreviated.

His solution may well have worked in a manner that I am unable to perceive. Besides, I may be a bit biased. I developed my own solution, the details of which have been posted (all be it in bits and pieces) here on the forum.

For stability sake, I would generally prefer the outfeed table to stay level when I tip the main table of the saw. At least then the outfeed table would catch the sliding board before gravity took it where I don't want it.
