Hard to say.

SS had switched to demo'ing at Lowes here in California, but I don't know about further up north.
More than likely, he was still working for SS at the time as I doubt Home Depot would allow him to demo there without being a rep/demonstrator for Shopsmith.

edmo51 wrote:Hi All,

I purchased my new SS 510 at the local Home Depot (here in Roseburg,Or) in Dec. I believe Mike was the rep who gave the demo. My question is who did I buy it from Mike or Shopsmith? I had a problem with delivery and missing parts but I assumed it was Home Depots fault.

When I contacted SS, the folks were very helpful and rectified all discepencies. Excellent Customer Support/Service. I am very Satisfied with my purchase!

Again was Mike working for Shopsmith in Dec,2007?
If not, does it have any impact on my purchase?
Example warranties,etc.

Thanks

Hi Ed Mo,

I think that the answer is: Yes]
"Is he in fact still employed by SS?"

"DIAL-511 FOR DREAM, WITH 500,510, 520"

THIS IS A NEW SERVICE I OFFER. IS IT ANOTHER "SMITTY MYTH" OR A DREAM? SEND ME $100 TO FIND OUT /grin/ Then you might DIAL-911 or DIAL-311 for help. All services come at a /price/ don't they?

................ Mr "Dusty" said this below but I can't access *any* of these training items..... so I made up my own....

QUOTE: Quite frankly, I am very content with what we already have. The Sawdust Sessions, this forum with its open line of communication, The Traveling Academy, Hands Online Shop Tips and a few local get togethers to discuss the craft - what more could we ask for.

The only things that I can think of right now are a bug free Online Sawdust Session every other Saturday and "The Shop Journals by Rick Davis" at a shipping/handling price I can afford.

Welcome to the forum buddydog! Dusty may know more about these get-togethers, but I am under the impression that they are "self organized", meaning that you must organize them yourself. You could go through the member profiles and send a private message to those that live near you, or you could post a thread here, in the "community" forum requesting interested parties to contact you. Good luck, as, so far, I have not heard of any of these get-togethers happening. A third option would be to get some family, friends, neighbors, fellow workers, etc., to get interested in their own Mark V's and you could get together with them.:D It is possible, that if there is a "turning club" in your area (check with your local Woodcraft or other store), some of those members may own Mark V's.

buddydog,

If you want to have a "local-get-together" of Shopsmith users, you'll have to either find one in your local area or create one. There is no registry of local users.

If you do create one, it will most probably not be sanctioned by Shopsmith; that is to say, Shopsmith will not provide support to your gathering and would have no liability.

Now if you were to gather together a significant number of "local" users who were interested and you contacted Shopsmith with a request for help - well, who knows. But if you did this, you would be breaking new ground. More power to you.

I would love to see "local chapters" of Shopsmith users. The problem with trying to establish one is primarily in making contact. Shopsmith holds the list of users (contact information) very close to the chest.

The only way I have been able to make contact has been through participation in the Traveling Academy. While in attendance, I requested that everyone provide name and email address. I have that information for the Tucson attendees that chose to provide same. Not everyone did!!!!

Understandably, many people are reluctant to provide that info to someone who is, for all practical purposes, a complete stranger.

You can witness the reluctance right here on the forum. Just look at the scarcity of personal information in the member profile list. Many members won't even list their home town and what sort of woodworking equipment they have.

On several occasions, there have be forum members who were experiencing difficulties with their equipment and they need help. Yet, they won't say "Hey, I'm in the XXXX area, is there anyone nearby who might be able to help me". Who knows, there may be a very experienced Shopsmith user just down the street.

Change of Topic: Please take a look at Your Personal Profile. Is it as complete as you are willing to make it?

Dusty -
A while back you suggested that if the Forum members would indicate their location we may be able to get together as individuals or groups as desired. (or something like that) I thought it was an excellent idea and immediately altered my signature to include a plea for more information on whereabouts of Forum members. I really believe including a guy's town, or location, like "Near Dayton" is pretty secure, but at the same time may lead to desirable personal contact. I have noticed more locations are slowly appearing!

I believe, not too long ago, a guy in So. Cal. was able to help out another.

Anyway there is a way to contact individuals - Through sending a 'private message'!
For example, - - "You asked for help, I notice we are both nearby, I'll try to get over to see you and share your problem if you are willing. Or maybe you could come to my place."

I used the fact that some member lived where I was going with my wife for business and when I had a free morning I spent a few hours in their shop. I will let them say who they are if they want. I personally had a great time talking Shopsmith over Starbucks, two of my favorite made in America products.

It actually turned out I could have almost walked between where my wifes class was and his shop. He class was one hour from our hotel so it was great to have something to do while I waited.

If people are worried my first suggestion was to meet at the local Starbucks.

Paul is talking about a very enjoyable morning that I was able to spend with him when he was in Tucson with his wife for the annual gem show.

She had a morning that was scheduled full with other activity and Paul had some time on his hands. We had communicated earlier and had arranged to "talk sawdust" during that otherwise idle morning.

I had a great time and I believe we shared a lot of interesting and enjoyable tales. We even discussed a few issues that did not involve "Shopsmith".

Yes, he did suggest meeting at "Starbucks". There are two within a mile or so but why. He brought Starbucks and we talked shop in the shop. A great way to spend a morning.

 I guess I could have put him to work as a second man on the surface planer but I hadn't gone to the lumber yard for the next project supplies. Poor planning on my part.

Charlese and I almost had another opportunity like this when he was in Arizona at Christmas time. But things just didn't work out. I left town about the same time he arrived. I gotta start planning better! I lose a lot of free labor this way.

Hi Everyone,

I tried to start a local chapter of Shopsmith users here in California and even considered starting a national organization similar to the "American Association of Woodturners" which is a national org., with local chapters through out the states and overseas. I checked into the legal aspect of it and it is a very complicated issue getting something like this off the ground.
I posted the idea here on this forum and found that only about seven Shopsmith owners posted replies who were interested in local chapters and a national organization.
Other owners posted replies saying that they would not be interested in these type of organizations. So it is here nor there.
And the other posts are correct. Only if you have a segnificant amount of woodworkers interested, Shopsmith will not be interested in backing local chapters. Trust me, I have looked into this.
And you also cannot use Shopsmiths name or trademark logo to promote it without their permission. I do not know if they would, as with the poor response my posts received I didn't persue the matter very much further.
As for a local chapter, I and some of the other local Shopsmith owners in my area have put together a mostly social type of club (14 total) that meet once a month or so at each others shops to drink coffee, eat donuts, and talk Shopsmith. Out get-togethers are very enjoyable and informative, but I don't see it growning much past what is is now.
