Different results from different browsers

For a long time now I have been using mostly Firefox browser running on Linux. It seemed to be bogging down a bit more lately and some sites were not rendering quite right. Now I am using Chromium (Chrome for Linux) and it is running faster and rendering some sites a lot better. The surprise is how much different this forum site is coming up. As an example with Firefox in the red header there is a "links" link but in Chromium that button is not there at all. The attachment manager is also a good bit different. Not a problem, just a surprise.
I'll have to putter with a few more browsers for fun just to see what they do. None will be Windows browsers, I swore off of Windows and will never go back... Never.

Major annoyance rant... Is sitting waiting for some page to load and looking down at the status bar and it says "waiting for double-click" or some other ad server... I have no problem with ads on pages, somebody has to pay the bills, but dang it, buy a server that can keep up...

That symptom is caused by not only the browser so don't blame Windows exclusively.

I use Firefox and Windows 7 and have absolutely no complaints. I avoid IE like the plague. I also have Chrome installed but don't use it much. Old Dog hangup.

Your ISP and the web links that it uses to get a signal in and out of your location would the top suspect on my list. Whenever I have your complaint about my system, I call my ISP (QWest aka Century Link). They never acknowledge a problem but soon after my making contact with a voice, my problem goes away.

Unfortunately, it is not always the server that can't keep up. Most of the time it has to do with the version of the software you are using and how well it is capable of comunicating with that version of the server software. It is one of my biggest peves with technology. It seems like it is always a constant battle to keep up with the times, versions, etc to be able to stay active online.

As a programmer (some of it web based) I can tell you to a certainty that getting a page to look the same in different browsers is very difficult.

I currently test on 4 browsers and am happy when something functions on all 4 correctly rendering the same is a whole different issue and i almost always settle for close enough. Much of this has to do with how the page is coded. For example using "Red" to set a color means different things to different browsers. A designer must be very specific about their coding. Add to this making things international and the world changes yet again.

How browsers render pages is deeply embedded in the code of each browser and they all do it differently. Add to this a web page designers desire to have things look a certain way and then only test in one browser adds significantly to the problem.

Browser differences are here to to stay and that won't change. It is not a function of the Operating System (Windows, Apple OSX, Linux) it is a function of the web browser application and how the programmers and managers for the various companies interpret the applicable standards. I say interpret because the wording in the standards is sometimes less than clear or specific. It is after all a guideline and not a legal document. The same browser will also render differently on different versions try comparing IE 5.5 to 6, 7, 8, 9, and now 10 they all can render the same web page differently. same with firefox major version changes. The standard evolves over time and the interpretation of the standard also evolves based on market pressure and perception.

Find a browser you like and stick with it until you don't like it. Then find another.

I use chrome for my default browser because it is definitely the fastest and in general renders things the way I expect. sometimes the colors are a bit muted though.

I don't blame Windows at all for this problem. I switched to Linux some time back. I just mentioned not using windows because I thought folks might start naming off other browsers for me to try but none of them would work with Linux.
I think Firefox is maybe a touch behind the front edge of web rendering compared to Chromium. Next month Firefox may be in front. As was said the standards (if you can call them that) are constantly changing. I used to say about farming that "every time you learn the rules the rules change"...
Just the world we live in.
Some of us old timers are going to find it increasingly hard to keep up with the snowballing changes that are coming.

This is a constant battle for me and the pace of change is only increasing.
