Getting to do some of the fun stuff along now.

Post by robinson46176 »

Spent a little time this morning cleaning and waxing (JPW) of a batch of backsaws. I did 7 of them but still have at least 3 not moved to the new shop yet. Light rust, built up grundge and even a little bird poop are some of the risk to polished tools in a shop that was not tight and where stuff tends to sweat a lot. It is not pitting rust nor even fluffy rust. it is more like the same rust used rather ironically as a rust protection on old firearms usually called "browning". Still I don't like it. I was cleaning mostly with coarse steel wool with some polishing cloth on some small spots.
I had considered pulling the handles off and refinishing them and really scouring the blades (except near the teeth) but then told myself that these are working tools, not something going to the Smithsonian... I did wax the handles along with the blades. One or two still are kind of brown but it will not be a problem.
I really enjoy doing this stuff, I just seem to never have the time. With the shop right here in the basement I am getting to more of it.
I think the planes are next.

I get just as much enjoyment cleaning, oiling etc... my tools as I do woodworking.

I often wonder if we are woodworkers who use tools or Tool collectors that do woodworking.

I would have to say that I am a tool collector but, except for my Shopsmith stuff, I have not don a real good job of collecting.

I was looking for my other 3 backsaws that I was sure I owned, in the farm shop yesterday and found 4. One of them still has the red .50 cent yard sale sticker on it.
I suspect that the conversation at time of purchase went something like: "Why are you buying that saw, you already have a whole bunch of them". At that point I usually respond with: "But I don't have THIS ONE"... Typically there is some eye rolling at that time and it is never me... :D
This is a common conversation over hammers and other tools. It is not even really a discussion, more of a habit or formality.
We met and started going together on March 6, 1962. She knows me pretty well... :)

Love cleaning my tools and then just feeling how smooth they operate. Got my headstock back from Mr. Bill Mayo about 2 weeks ago. While it was apart, decided to totally clean everything. Stripped all with mineral spirits, polished with Mother's aluminum polish, the applied a good coat of JPW. Then squared everything just as if it was coming out of the box. Found the fence skewing to the left again. Also, found the extension table not quiet flat. So, will be adjusting the table as the fence is adjusted. Then will make sawdust tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Can hardly wait. No electricity in the garage, have to move it to the outlet on the back of the house. I want to make a good report back to Mr. Bill. :D

I just love it when she says I can go make sawdust. ;) :D
