We have a Gander Mountain North of Dayton, Ohio. (Not far from Shopsmith) I did not think too much of it. Never been to a Cabela's store, only ordered from a catalog once. Bass Pro is a fun place to go.joedw00 wrote:They just opened one here in Wichita. We have a Gander Mountain here too, but it can't beat Cabelas.

We are having a big stink over Bass Pro shops and the local Government giving them tax concessions to induce them to build a store in the Tampa area.
Local boat shop and tackle shop owners are screaming foul, they claim they didn't get any concessions, so why should Bass Pro.
They have a point. However Bass Pro hires hundreds and surveys have proven that Bass Pro are actually tourist draws to an area.
Dad will bring the kids to Busch Gardens if they allow him a quick trip to Bass Pro.
I sure would like a Bass Pro closer than the 90 miles to Orlando we now have.

I'm drooling. In Los Angeles the nearest BassPro is over an hours drive. The one in Las Vegas is lovely but more tourist based with mostly clothing and such. I spent hours in the store in Springfield, MO when we were out that way. Yes it is fun to daydream, and pick up some stuff along the way.

My father purchased my first fishing pole from cabela's in the 60's. The shop was in the basement of a furniture shop in western Nebraska (if memory serves). I have been a Cabela's addict ever since.
Last summer I accompanied a group of young adults on a church sponsored build and cleanup week in West Virgina coal country. I was in charge of a group from New Jersey. I wore shoes shirt and hat with the cabela's logo.
I was amazed that these teens from New Jersey not only recognized the cabela brand but thought of it as some sort of fashion statement.

I am envious of those with a Cabelas nearby. In Denver the people here were opposed to having new jobs in the area and fought the planned store. Everybody lost no new jobs and no Cabelas. I also remember the western Nebraska store. My favorite part o driving between Denver and Virginia has been our stops at the store west of Kansas City. One of my last visits was too replace a piece of luggage purchased there that the airlines ruined. When I pointed out the bag that was ruined the clerk asked how long I owned it (6 years) how often was it used (one week per year for Alaska trip), his response that's too little use bring it in and we will replace it for free. Now that is my kind of store. Jim
