when i bought a used 510 from the in-law last fall.

he had bought the 510 brand news to replace a greenie that
he had bought used.

the other day he stopped and gave me a copy of
SHOP MAG.......

it is dated 1956 and says on the inside that it is the first
edition of the magazine. apparently went to new SS owners.

notice the prices on the back page .. guess that what it was in 1956[ATTACH]17047[/ATTACH]

for some reason i cant get the magazine pictures to make

a good copy..
the prices were bandsaw $79.95 belt sander $49.95

Today they would cost $544.99 and 429.99 according to shopsmith.com.

Not bad. Still selling at 1956 prices.

$.50 in 1956 would be $3.97 in 2010. The calculator only goes to 2010 so you can guess from there.

I don't remember what gasoline cost in 1956 but I think it was less than $.50/gallon. All I remember was that $2.00 worth gave me enough in the tank to make it through a Friday night date which would have included cruising the strip and parking by the river at the edge of town.

I seem to remember gas being 12 cents a gallon during a price war in the mid 50's. I also remember in the 70's Dodge had cars with twin four barrel carbs on Hemi's that got 4 mpg because everybody was driving them flat out from stop light to stop light spinning the rear tires all the way. My how times have changed. My Prius gets 60 mpg and you couldn't spin the tires even in the mud :)

My, my, my how things are different.

In the 50s I drove a 1947 Plymouth sedan. It went 0-60mph in 60 minutes. I don't have the vaguest idea what the MPG were. I never cared enough to check. All I did was make sure I had a dollar in my pocket so that I could buy enough gas to get home.

As a kid growing up in Suburban New Jersey in the sixties, I took over my brothers neighborhood lawn cutting business.
I would push the mower down the street and over a couple of blocks to the Gulf station to fill the tank. That's when gas was $0.25 for regular and $0.30 for 104 octane.
the owner of the station would get so mad at me for buying a dimes worth of gas at a time, he insisted I buy a 1 gallon can from him, he even let me pay it off a quarter a week for a month. He was really a cool guy.
Damn, what a different country we were then. And I'm not talking prices.
