yet another 510

Post by peterm »

A month ago, I decided I really did not need two Model 510s, a mini and a dedicated SS drill press, so I sold a 510 to my BIL. Yesterday looking at my local buy n sell (Kijiji), I spot a nice looking 510, with a belt sander, a scroll saw, a jointer and a SS dust collector for $600 CDN. Too good a deal to pass up. I responded to the seller by email (no phone number given in the ad :( ) about 30 minutes after the ad was posted and today he called. Yippee!
So, I am going to see and likely buy in a couple of hours..........after buying and selling 5 units to get the ones I have, why am I excited? It is a sickness! :D
Here is a pic that accompanied the ad:

Interesting that there seems to be a fence off a band saw or maybe a 500 along side the 510's.

Well, I went and took a look at it...........:(

The extra fence was off a Craftsman, as was the miter gauge. The belt sander turned out to be a rather poor looking strip sander, which I already have. I was really hoping for a good 6" belt sander. The jointer and scroll saw would need work and the dust collector needed new hoses. Nothing insurmountable but all in all, I decided to pass, since I would have had to sell his 510 and the spt's that I already have.

On the other hand, I called a friend who is looking for a 510 and some spt's so he may benefit!:D

You are right it is a sickness, I don't think I could have passed it up though, no will power.

I just checked and the ad has been deleted by the owner after less than 36hrs, so it looks like someone else got the "bargain".

Patience pays. I keep an eye on our local Kijiji and under “hobbies” was an ad from a guy who wanted to clean out his garage and was selling a 500. I contacted him and ended up bringing home a Shopsmith Mark V (500) with a SS 6” belt sander and a SS dust collector and lots of extras (usual accessories for the 500, wood clamps, many spare sanding discs, belts and drums, 4 lathe chisels, molding head, dado set, Wagner rotary planer, big set of spur drills, little set of spur drills, a can of SS touchup paint and other stuff) all for $200. An even better deal than the first one. We go months here without any "deals" and then two pop up in a week.

The machines are in pretty good condition but need some rust removal here and there, nothing a wire wheel or Evaporust will not fix! The lathe spur center and the SS manual were missing.

I am looking forward to some happy hours cleaning and maintaining this weekend. I am hoping the belt sander is better than the one I have now. I found a copy of the dust collector owner’s manual on the web and printed it out. Eventually I expect to sell the 500 and the spare belt sander.
Collecting this Shopsmith stuff really is fun!:D

That's NOT a good deal. That is grand larceny. You can go to jail for less than what you have just done.
