Clean that headstock!

I've been having a fine time getting my daughters "new" 1960 Goldie Mark 5 500 tuned up. The previous owner took good care of it, so I was shocked when I opened up the headstock and discovered an enormous amount of sawdust in there. I've never seen anything like it, it was ridiculous. I was surprised that the machine was able to run at all. Anyhow, just a friendly reminder to blow/vacuum out your headstock on occasion. It's amazing how much sawdust is able to build up in there if you don't! Alec

Cleaned up a goldie, where I found compacted sawdust inside the Headstock. I think that the PO oiled the sheaves and spindle advance w/o blowing out the sawdust leading to the compacted accumulation. The motor had the most irritating squeal which I assumed was motor bearings. When I pulled the motor pan to replace the motor bearings, it was quiet. Go figure.

Yesterday, I did headstock maintenance on the BS/Lathe SS and it took a lot of time to get most of the dust out of the headstock w/compressed air. Now, I may have been a little late getting around to it, and I blamed it on blowing it out in drill press mode before lubing, but the bottom of the motor pan is blocked with the plate between the sheaves and the motor.
