Insulated the shop!

Some of you may remember my small post and beam shop (12 x 20 ext. dimension). I finally got around to insulating and hanging plywood on the walls. Still have to plywood the ceiling, but it's coming along and I look forward to being able to use my shop all year long. It's so small that I think an electric oil-filled radiator will be sufficient to heat it. This picture is standing in the open double doors at one end of the shop. You can just make out my daughters "new" goldie in the lower left of the picture. Alec

2 sabre saws? And, a nice PowerPro! Shop looks nice and well organized.

Yes Steve - I just got the second jig saw with the goldie I bought. It needs work. My original operates fine, albeit a bit "leaky".
The shop is clean for the first time in over a year. Getting it finally insulated and building the shallow shelves on the walls has been a great help in getting it organized; hopefully I can keep it looking reasonable clean! It certainly is easier to maneuver in a small shop when it's clean. Thanks - Alec

I have been thinking about ways to store my band saw. I think I like your approach. I may take liberty with your design. Great shop. I also have a postage stamp.

By the way, can we ask about your PowerPro saga? A while back a lot transpired on the Forum about running the bandsaw successfully, and I recall you had some issues early on with your 'goldie' PowerPro.

Chris - thanks! As for the PowerPro - all is good, with a couple notes: As you may recall, the first unit I got would not run at low temps and was eventually replaced by Shopsmith. The second unit had two issues: It was tripping my GFCI outlets and the bandsaw performance was atrocious. For the first, I switched out my outlets to non-GFCI outlets - such is life. As for the bandsaw, I am convinced that as was determined by members here, the coupler connection was poor and resulted in the PowerPro issues. Admittedly, I have not yet run the bandsaw with my new coupler - just now getting the shop back in working order after a long layoff, but my old coupler was worn and I also noted that the hub at the BS shaft was seated too deeply and was jammed there and thus not fully engaging the already worn splines at my old coupler. (Indeed, I suspect this is what wore the coupler in the first place). I should have noticed this before "losing my cool", but I never noticed it since it did not result in poor performance with the original mechanical headstock; sometimes "old" trechnology is more forgiving! I am sure that was the issue, but will report back in the coming weeks when I finally get the bandsaw hub seated properly and fully engaged with my new coupler to the PowerPro. Cheers! Alec

I air sealed & insulated my shop almost 2 years ago with closed-cell foam. It is not heated or cooled even though I have an A/C unit in the wall and electric baseboard heaters. I have a small propane heater which is more than enough- In the winter it never gets lower than 42 degree. In the summer in gets no hotter than 68 degrees unless I open the doors. My walls are like R-30 & the ceiling is R-42 with the foam which is like R-60 because of the air sealing. It's on a poured concrete slab. I'm thinking of sealing the concrete and then put a plywood floor.

This project started in 2008 & will be completed next week. We had the top of the garage taken off & had a 14 x 28 master bedroom build onto the top floor of our split-level home. I also extended the garage for my wood shop & started buy anything Shopsmith which seemed like a good value. As a result I have 1 Mark 7 (upgraded 510), 3 gray Mark Vs, & a Greenie along with 5 10E/ERs. People were just about giving them away $50 to $300. In a couple of weeks, all the top floor furniture of our home will be out of my Shop and I will finally have a shop!

It started out with my wife wanting a closet. Well I got carried away with the master bedroom addition, a 20 x43' shed roof which runs off the right side of our home for a 10,000 watt solar power system & while I was at it, we had the 1,000 gallon fuel oil tank removed and a geothermal heat pump connected to two 600 foot closed vertical loops for our heating & cooling needs.

I obviously had too much time on my hands as I also changed from copper pipe to PEX, upgraded the power service to 200 amps and ran a 100 amp sub-panel in the garage/workshop. Added a master bathroom with a shower, extended the main bathroom. That required a PVC drain system which I connected a utility sink in my workshop to. Had the house air sealed and ventilated with an energy recovery ventilator drawing stale air from all the bathrooms & kitchen & delivering fresh air into all the bedrooms.

It kinda of got out of control... But it will be nice. I look forward to building a 20 x 23 kitchen/ great room under the solar roof as our current kitchen is way too small- over my wife & I have gotten too big...<smile>

I need to make wood chips now with my PowerPro!
