Thanks for posting. It looks like he took his Mark V off its legs and mounted it to a bench.

I'd expect he's using something like a tapered jam chuck and quite possibly it was custom made. Since the duck call has a through bore, you just jam it onto the tapered chuck. At the tailstock end you would use a bull nose live center to center it at that end.

You could make one using a face plate with a wooden disk screwed to it. Then bore a hole in the center and glue in a short piece of dowel. After the glue dries you could turn a taper on the dowel. Or, you could mount a piece of dowel on the screw center and taper it.

His SS set-up looks rock solid with no vibration, etc. It looks like he mounted a shorty on a custom workbench and probably weighted the bench to keep it from moving, and also raising it up to proper turning height, as the SS is a bit short for most turners. Maybe I'll do that with the extra SS I have so I'll have another woodturning station for teaching beginning woodturners in my club.

Thanks for the post as it is neat to see how others have adapted a SS for custom work, and also seeing how duck calls are made. I've seen the kits for them, but I've never seen one made before. Maybe I'll give it a try.
