Another Speed Control Issue/Question

I own the Reddie and I'm almost done with the restoration. This was the Greenie that I think Shopsmith turned into a Reddie for internal use. This was a 1954 era machine with an A casting but lots of other parts that came from who knows where, sort of a hybrid.

I may or may not have the right configuration for the speed control. The original setup was the A casting with an embossed plate attached to the switch that acted as an anti-rattle device. I changed to a B casting and added the little anti-rattle spring I bought from SS. This new spring has a littler spring that sticks up and rides on the back of the control ring to stop the rattleing. Now when I hand turn my original speed control ring by hand the ring does not stop at the Fast and Slow marks on the ring. It stops elsewhere as I describe here. It

There is a groove machined into the back of my control ring as shown here:

When I hand turn the ring it actually stops at before Slow and at S as seen here. It stops when the little spring on the anit-rattler hits the end of the groove.

These actual stops correspond to the locations of the ends of the machined groove. The actual stops do not correspond with the indicated Fast and Slow stops. Why don't they?

Is the control ring used in the A casting era different from the control ring used in the B casting era? Do the current control rings not have this machined grove? Do I have more parts in my future?

There have been no changes to the back of the ring. The anti-rattle spring rides against/in the groove up to a position between saw/rout. At that position the spring rides up the ramp at the end of the groove. This causes greater force by the springs against the back of the ring, and this extra resistance can be felt while turning the crank. The grooves etc. have nothing to do with stop positions.

However with the A headstock, the stop spring(plate) mounted under the switch needed to be depressed to allow adjusting above that position. That button on the inside end of the plate rode in the groove.

Performing a 'high speed' adjustment includes proper positioning of the speed indicator ring in a near final step.

There's no ramp in the groove on my control ring. It's a square ridge. If you look closely at the pic you can see what's there.

The little springee on the anti-rattle spring does sit somewhat vertical and it appears to roll. I can visualize it could ride up and over the ridge if enough force was applied. But. I do not force the control handle since I've become sensitive to stripping the teeth in the back of it. Perhaps I'm just too timid.

After I connect the control sheave to the pork chop I'll test my force and hope. I have another possible issue with the speed control that I may post later if it becomes real and I can't figure it out.

Please show me a good picture of the anti-rattle spring. I believe my 1955 Greenie is missing it, and when I get around to refurbing it again I'll get one, and need to know how it looks, loose and installed. Thanks.

I see the 'ramp' in your pix. It is quite steep and odddly shaped due to the groove shape. See post # 7

Closer examination of your pix reveals there is indeed a difference. The saw/joint end is (as you stated) not ramped. I only looked at the other end!:(

Well today's education/self humiliation has occurred.

I be willing to send you a newer version that is cleaned up, but lacking red paint inlay. You can add the old one to 'the pile'!;)

I'll post on the forum pics of the springs as requested by mgdesigns.

Also, I haven't gotten to the HST yet. It's my next step. I hadn't seen those instructions. Thanks a lot for them.

This is a pix of the anti-rattle device on the A casting. Note the plate is mounted with the power switch.

This is a pix of the mounting location of the anti-rattle spring on a B casting. Note the recesses on either side of the opening for the speed controller and the little hole in the right hand recess.

This is the anti-rattle spring used for the B casting. The little stub on the right fits into the little hole in the right hand recess in the casting. It just goes in. The speed control ring presses it into the recess and keeps it there while the ring is on.

Now, in a year when you decide to take the ring off and you don't remember the spring is there, there is an outstanding chance you will be doing a search of your motor pan to find it. Or going through the sweepings you put in the trash. I'm going to use a dollop of silicon in that little hole.
