Closet Shopsmith User

[Culprit]

I'm sure many of you are already familiar with Matthias Wandel and his Woodgears.ca website. He posts new articles every Monday, and if you're on his e-mail list, he often sends extra links of interesting woodworking things elsewhere on the web that aren't posted on his site directly. He is perhaps best known for his shop-made tools like bandsaws, and screw advance box joint jigs. But did you know he is a closet Shopsmith user?

I didn't until today. I was watching his weekly article/video and noticed the familiar red Shopsmith logo flash across the screen as Matthias briefly touched up a workpiece on his Magna Shopsmith belt sander. It looked like he was running it from a Power Station. I have no idea if he owns a full Mk 5 (or 7, or V, or VII) or not. I've never seen one in the background of pictures and videos.

Imagine the things his creativity would come up with along the lines of jigs and shop-built SPT's if he was turned wholly to the dark side. "A powerful ally, he would be."

We should each write him an e-mail today telling him we noticed his SS belt sander, and encouraging him to look into a Mk 5/7/V/VII. One of our Canadian bretheren in the Ottawa area should invite him over for a personal demo. Matthias could do one of his weekly articles/videos of it. He reaches a pretty large audience every week.

I wouldn't call him a closet SS user. He does show the SS logo clearly in the video, so he is not trying to hide the brand of tools he is using. I think he just uses what he can find at a good deal and creates home-built items around them so they work for his particular needs.
