Visual wobble of saw blade

WHAT was replaced?

Sorry, too much thinking, not enough description. I replaced the entire quill.

Didn't even think ofmbearings, just went with the two bearing upgrade.

Please bear with me. I am sorta new at this (as if you could not tell). I plan to take the quill to a local machine shop and ask them to press the shaft and bearing out in hopes of finding that the bearing is not seated correctly. Does that seems like a logical next step?

I would do this first.

The knurled collar holds the quill shaft against the back of the bearing.

There is a retaining ring, but that only secures the bearing.

Remove the collar - the set screw socket may be filled - clean it out.

Notice the second tapered shaft.

Pull out on the shaft, and reinstall the collar while aligning the set screw to the shaft flat.

As you retighten the set screw, maintain pulling out on the shaft while pushing in on the collar. Rock the wrench to insure the setscrew bottoms on the center of the flat.

If the collar is not touching against the inner race of the bearing, the shaft is free to slide in/out.

That should fix the 'in/out', but if runout(wobble/side to side play) exists, a new bearing is needed.

Thanks JPG. I believe you got it. The knurled collar was too far from the bearing. Once I moved it closer to the bearing the problem was solved. The bearing appears to be good. I am a happy camper. Thanks to all for their input on this problem.

FWIW That is the second time this week. Maybe a show n tell is needed!:rolleyes:
