What do you think the average age of the Shopsmith owner is?

I think that 60 is a bit high but not very much. Since 60 has already been taken I'll say 55 and bet that if known it would be somewhere in between the two.

The average age of the active forum members is higher but that is because a dozen or so of us skew the numbers in that direction.:)

70 last month but bought my first Shopsmith new in 1988 (24 years ago). I had seriously wanted one for 28 years before that.

My first bandsaw sawmill (Kasco) was bought about that time. I had a small, not very good, circle saw mill for a short while before that but I don't really count it. I used my big (would saw a 24' long log x 30' dia.) Kasco mill for maybe 6 or 8 years then stupidly sold it. I did sell it for almost what I paid for it.
I now have a small Woodmizer mill and I am on a forestry forum where all brands of mills are approached with the cult-like love of them about like a Shopsmith. It also has the same level of friendliness and helpfulness as this one. That is hard to find on the web...
There are a lot of old geezers there too. :D

A few months ago (January - 2007) there was a survey - answered by over 300 owners on this forum. 60 yrs is a pretty good guess. Here is the thread. If you haven't yet participated in the poll - do so.

Median is 9 folks into the 56-65 group of 108 so assuming even age distribution in that range, 56 + 10 month.

I guess the poll pretty much confirms my suspicions. I bought my MarkV in 1980 after seeing a demo at a mall in South Bend IN. I immediately applied for a "Shopsmith Card". I bought the MarkV with a bandsaw and a large accessory package. The cost was $1800 which was about half the price of a car. It parked in an 8 x 9 bedroom and I made a lot of cool stuff. I am now nearly 60 and use it on nearly every project even though I have amassed a good selection of stand alone tools. If you take your time, there isn't a more accurate tool that I have found. Maybe a little more convenient, but not better.
