You guys are awesome!!! I have been running mine alot lately making lots of pens. Lube is needed badly.

will this solve my issue of the speed dial being really hard to turn? feels real tight, it turns, just with more force than usual. I've been putting some long hours on it having fun with the lathe.

Yes it should. That is a good sign that it is in need of lubrication. If you continue without oiling it could damage the speed control.

Hard to turn can be a combination of things:

1) full of sawdust crud behind the speed dial
2) sheeves need oil
3) quadrant needs some lube
4) the bronze bushing that the worm gear which drives the quadrant may need some lube.

One more - You have been trying to slow down too fast or turning it down with the pulleys not turning.

Sheaves includes the motor pulley.

thank you guys. all those sound like easy fixes, essentially clean the holy hell out of it, lube the holy hell out of it. Working on it tomorrow.

oiled up an running smooth....but

now it won't go all the way down to A, slowest speed. Looks like the button bearing catches on the the little bolt in the arm. AND when i try to speed it all the way up, the sheave hits the arm, goes too far before the dial hits the highest speed.

High speed adjustment is one portion. The other thing is that the idler sheeve may be adusted improperly (ie: too far towards the interior of the headstock)
