Perhaps it is time for some smart young person to do the age survey again. Hmmmm, that criteria left me out. Someone else could tackle the process. Jim

Plus almost 3 to 5 more years, as the poll was done in 2007. Hard to say how many years to add - as many have added to the poll over the last few years.

It is still my guess the average age is around 60.

What is the average age of a SS owner? I'll give almost the same answer when asked how long my wife and I have been married: "Not long enough", and as for the average age it's "Not old enough."

Yep! He may be! clementfeme's last post was in 2010 - - But there is also RonKline , who was 80 in March. Ron posted above (post#19) just a few days ago.

Maybe these guys will both show us the month of their birth - Until then I'll give them my best wishes and call it a tie for being our most senior sages.

Not a shopsmith owner yet, but actively looking; will turn 50 in September. There was a time when more young people were into woodworking. My first experience was with my grandfather (shopsmith owner), and my father is a pretty good shade tree carpenter, me I am about average. I was then exposed to woodworking in Junior High and High School. I do not know if many schools even offer shop classes anymore with all the budget cuts etc. Less exposure to the hobby means fewer young people who do not get to experience the pride and joy of physically creating something from a block or stack of wood. Even now, when some of my projects do not turn out perfect, I can say "you know, I did not buy that at Wal-mart or Lowe's, I built that."

It is a shame, but for many of us I think it is not until we approach our fifties that we have not only the facility's (shop and building), the time, and the disposable income to get back into the hobby. Kinda reminds me of Amateur (HAM) radio, it's kind of weird being one of the younger members of the group at 49. :)

How about the age when you purchased one? That would have made me 43 at the time.
