turret tail stock?

Post by dharps »

Greetings: Using my Shopsmith as a lathe, it would be a great work saver to have a turret. I.e multiple tools that are easily changed in the tail-stock. Has this been done? Any suggestions?

I don't know if anyone else has posted about it, but seems like it should work.

That might be a good option. The shopsmith uses MT2 on the tailstock, so presumably it should just work.

Does anyone know if they make a collet set for the headstock? Something like is in this post.

I have one similar to that from PSI pennstateind.com
it is an ER 32 collet chuck that mounts on a 5/8" straight bore to 1" x 8 TPI adapter.

These can also be purchased a craft supply USA or from Beall tool. Supposedly the Beall is considered the best due to is lower profile, but you do pay more. Either of these also require the spindle adapter to work on a shopsmith. The adapter is a separate purchase from PSI.

I have had great results with the one from PSI. Any out of round issues are either due to the spindle bearings being bad(before I changed them) or not using the tool correctly. Used correctly it is very precise and uses standard ER 32 collets.

Yes you can find collets that fit directly into the Shopsmith post but they are expensive. I got a high quality, US made 5/8" to lathe standard thread adapter (there are lots of choices to pick, US and China made). Then I can use a variety of accessories that are not easily available for the Shopsmith.

If all you want to do is use the Steb centers shown they are available to fit the Shopsmith directly or through a chuck. I use them to do interesting off-center turnings for ice cream scoops.
