Goldie Might be Mine

I have been looking for a Shopsmith Mark V for some time now, and came across a great deal on a 520, but I am second in line to purchase. If they guy does not show up at the sellers tonight it's mine. While waiting, I have found what appears to be a decent looking Goldie with bandsaw for about half the price.

The only problem with the Goldie is that it is not being sold by the owner, rather it was found in a shop on some property bought by a commercial property company. They tell me the motor runs, but I will have to inspect that for myself. Thanks to everyone here I am sure I can make a pretty decent inspection of the unit. The only catch is that it is missing the sanding disk, and tool rest for lathe, and all the woodworking tools. In addition I am not sure if all the arbors and small misc parts are there. For $250 I think it might be a good deal, I would prefer a poly V belt, but not sure what year Goldie it is, will determine that when I get there if the deal with the 520 fall through.

I guess my concern is how much it will cost me to get all the replacement parts I need as I will not have a decent inventory of what I need. There are also no manuals or other stuff with it. Just kind of wondered if having to purchase all the smaller odds and ends will make this cost more than buying it complete. Tried to upload a pic (not sure if it will work), the table for the table saw may be damaged I am not sure it is off kilter in the photo and has some rust on the tubes.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated towards the purchase of the Goldie if the 520 deal falls through.

My preference and if you are going to use to table saw function a lot would be to go for a 510/520. The larger table makes a major difference. If you get a chance for the 520 @ $500 go for it.

Buying missing parts can get pretty expensive. As for resale, I'm betting you'll have an easier time reselling a 520 for $1000 then a Goldie for $250.

Yea I saw that, my current budget is $500. I might have $750 by next month so I may continue to look around. I guess my initial thinking is that if a Shopsmith bandsaw sold for about $150 to $170 used, and I could get the Goldie for $200, would it be work it. With the missing parts, if the motor and speed changer worked correctly I was going to offer them $200.00 with the bandsaw being a bonus. That is of course if it works.

I realize that I may have to replace the belts and bearings, but that may be the case in any machine I buy. There are several other Mark V's in the area in my price range, but most of them do not have a bandsaw or other accessories.

This would definately be my preference and I may wait a little longer, most of the 520 I have sen around here tend to be selling in the $1500 range which is a little out of my budget. Really wanted the 520, but just got the email, the other guy picked it up this evening...

The Goldie table appears to be merely 'tilted', not bent etc. It is a bit rough, but as you know, that can be overcome!;)

The missing stuff is not all that extensive. Can be a bit pricey on e-bay at times though(patience is a virtue). Sometimes new from ss is cheaper!:D

Not sure when the two slot table was issued, but for sure the Poly-v/1 1/8hp version had it.

The Goldie would get you 'started', and if procured cheaply enough, it would be a training ground and backup for a later acquisition. Resale is not an issue for me!:eek:

JPG is right, at $200 you aren't out that much and you get the bandsaw. I know you are set on a 520, but as I think I mentioned in another thread to you. A 510 will probably come around 5x-10x more often than a 520. You would be better off buying a cheaper 510 and paying for the upgrade from Shopsmith for $500 than over paying for a 520.

Accessories often are the big plus when comparing used Shopsmiths.

You also might find as some around here have, a 510 is good enough. The only real difference is the fence.

Definitely agree with ya on that! BTW, after speaking with the "Boss" got the ok, to increase my budget knowing the Mark V with all the extras at $750 was a pretty good deal, but alas someone beat me to the punch. Got some other leads on a couple Mark V's, but may not pull the trigger just yet. Glad I married a good woman.
