I'm trying to pull the quill Mechanism. I pulled all the handles, and the depth ring and all the washers. I pulled the bushing from the opposite side of the spring. Now my problem is that there is a keeper or key in the slot in the rod that won't let the shaft slide thru the dome washer so I can pull out the assembly. If I have to remove the key or keeper it looks like it will be a challenge.
Any ideas

Quill Assembly Mechanism

This sometimes calls for patience. The dome washer will normally pass over the woodruff key, but the key cannot be cocked. You need to make sure the key is seated and its face is parallel to the axis of the shaft and the washer will just clear the key.rwilabee wrote:I'm trying to pull the quill Mechanism. Quill Advance Assembly
I have found only 2 headstocks where the washer ID was the same size as the quill advance shaft OD. I believe these washers had been replaced with a non-shopsmith washer previously. I had to turn the headstock upside down and was able to cock/rock the woodworth key (half moon) to where I could remove it. This was quite a pain to accomplish.
Be careful not to let loose the quill advance handle when there is any spring tension left. Do not rotate the quill advance handle in a CCW direction or just let the handle loose with spring tension as this can unhoop the quill advance spring which is a bear to reattach.
