Wheel versus Quill
Is it possible to replace the Quill Feed Handle Assembly Part 513682 (1983 Mark V) with just ordering the Table Height Crank Assembly – 514330 or are there more parts and pieces needed? I’d like to get rid of the darned quill that seems to be set at the wrong spot most of the time….
Thanks

If the quill handle irritates you that much, it could certainly be replaced by something like the Table Height Crank but you have to devise a method of securing the Crank to the Quill Shaft.jarhead wrote:Is it possible to replace the Quill Feed Handle Assembly Part 513682 (1983 Mark V) with just ordering the Table Height Crank Assembly – 514330 or are there more parts and pieces needed? I must admit that I am often frustrated by the Quill Handle. It is often where I don't want it. Yes, it can readily be relocated but .....
If you are thinking seriously about doing this, keep in mind that there is some mechanical advantage provided by the Quill Handle. A small crank would have the effect of reducing that mechanical advantage.

Attach the small faceplate to the quill shaft.

Go for the Mark 7 but keep your existing machine.jarhead wrote:Thanks all - I'm still in that stage of - - - should I upgrade in bits and pieces (1983 Mark V that's original except for the brand new larger wheels) or go get the new beastie with all the bells and whistles. (and that fantastic motor!)

The 3-Lever Quill Handle is still offered by Shopsmith. Mine hangs on the wall most of the time.wa2crk wrote:Shopsmith did have a three handled quill feed lever at one time but I don't know if it is still available.

As does mine. I used it for a few days and found it frequently in the way. It is great when drilling however. actually I mounted mine on the rear of the headstock for a period of time. Jimdusty wrote:The 3-Lever Quill Handle is still offered by Shopsmith. Mine hangs on the wall most of the time.

It is most useful when in vertical drill press mode. I believe that is the intention.fjimp wrote:As does mine. I used it for a few days and found it frequently in the way. It is great when drilling however. actually I mounted mine on the rear of the headstock for a period of time. Jim
