Question about the Shopsmith-sold Nova G3

Question about the Shopsmith-sold Nova G3

I am considering the Nova G3 sold by Shopsmith.

Does the version sold by Shopsmith attach directly to the headstock, or does it use a threaded adapter?

If it uses a threaded adapter, is there a set scew or something to prevent the chuck from walking off the threads when spinning backwards for sanding?

I made my Greenie reversible, and it's awesome for pens - I can't wait to try bowls and such. I also want to use the G3 to grip pen blanks for drilling so I don't have to adjust the main table and clamp the blank down on it to drill. Every blank I cut is sized just a little different and fine tuning the horizontal boring setup can be time consuming. I'm thinking the G3 scroll chuck with the pin jaws that Shopsmith includes will streamline that process.

It's provided with a 5/8's plain adapter. Which attaches the same way as all other items attached to the spindle.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Most Nova chucks themselves have a female threat that is 1 1/2" x 8 TPI, so they require an adapter that is sized to match the various spindle threads (like 1" x 8TPI or 3/4" x 16 TPI, etc.) and the Shopsmith 5/8" smooth bore. These adapters/inserts have a 1 1/2" male thread that fits into the chuck and there is a set screw for locking the threads in place. The owners manual that I have says to ensure that this set screw is secure before using it left hand/outboard. The Shopsmith adapter/insert has a second set screw for locking it to the Shopsmith spindle.

Cool I bought one a few weeks ago when Shopsmith had the email deal,
since my shopsmith is still in pieces I never looked at the Nova to close.
That insert may allow me to use several chucks for my metal lathe on the shopsmith.
Four independent jaws may come in handy sometime.
I'll have to check it out when I get time after the holiday.

I 'm doing to much now rebuilding my pier, fences, deck, and much more...
work for 10 rest for 20..... 94° now going above 100° today

The Nova adapter/insert for the Shopsmith will thread into metal working chucks with a 1 1/2" x 8 TPI bore, but you might want to try this with a new adapter/insert and keep it that way because the threads get a bit bunged up from the set screw that holds them in the Nova chuck. My 4 jaw for the metal lathe is 8" in diameter and quite heavy, so it's not something I'd want to try on the Shopsmith spindle.

I've got a lightweight independent 6" four jaw that's threaded 1" x 8 TPI that I can mount on the Shopsmith using one of those Penn State Industries adapters. The chuck is similar to this Grizzly's model -- http://www.grizzly.com/products/6-4-Jaw ... -TPI/H8049

Grizzly also has a similar model with a smooth 5/8" bore that might fit directly to the Shopsmith spindle, but I've no experience with this one -- http://www.grizzly.com/products/6-4-Jaw ... aded/H8047 -- At $31 it's certainly worth a try, but it appears to be on backorder now.
