Extension Tables and the Mark 7

Post by dusty »

I believe I am correct when I say that hardly anyone with a Mark 5/V will tell you that an Extension Table can be used interchangeably at either end without needing to realign the extension table.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone/everyone who has a Mark 7 or a Mark V with dual tilt about this.

Do the two newly designed Base Arms create a more stable physical environment for the Headstock and Carriage than did the Tie Bar and Base Arm and Headrest configuration?

If they do, Extension Tables just might be totally interchangeable without realignment.

I would not put my money on that!;) Gooder does not equal perfect. Do consider the base will still shift slightly with floor irregularities(A subject which you unnerstan all too well!):).

If the subject Mark V seldom got relocated, would you think any differently about this?

I have been thinking about upgrading to a dual tilt not because I want that capability but rather because it might give me the ability to use an extension table on either end without sacrifice.

Despite my undulating garage floors, I can locate my Mark V where in is level and stable but I cannot move my extension table back and forth. I have always believed that to be a by product of the Tie Bar and Headrest.

The new configuration might correct that. This is why I am seeking feedback.

I upgraded my last 520 last Sunday. I have not yet taken time to accurately and totally check alignment. However a quick check would seem to confirm Dusty's suspicion. It will take me a few more days to check all tables out totally. At this moment I confess to being far more concerned about traveling around the Colorado Springs fires tomorrow and bringing my eleven year old daughter back from our church camp on the west tide of Pikes Peak, to Denver. First things first. Jim

Probably not something I would depend upon even if the legs were bolted down.

I agree the tie bar etc. contributes to the problem, but I do not think they tell all the tale. I am not sure I would have faith in a single extension table even if there were no hinges etc.

And I do not own a dial indicator(at least not one as good as yours!;)).

I do own more than one extension table for the Goldie, but that is a fairly recent condition. I have not aligned one of them to the left and reserved it for use there. I never felt the need, but then my using a fence on that side is a rare happenstance.

Now I have gone in circles trying to get any of three fences to properly align with any of three tables(2 main and the bandsaw) reliably with any degree of repeatability. I have come to accept the result, but tis far from perfect.

You think 510- and 520 rails are less than straight, think re the bandsaw extrusion and realize that is also what is on a wider main table and that they have oversize mounting holes.

Cheaper to buy another extension table, align it to the left side, and use it there only, no?

Good point especially when you learn that I already have two extension tables.

Of course you could always "justify" the double tilt on the theory that it will take up less space in the garage and then sell one of your extension tables.

Great idea thanks for the suggestion. I discovered at dinner that I am not driving to PP tomorrow. Still the honey do list will keep me from the shop. Jim
