Spindal heating up.

The lower auxiliary spindle on the left side of the headstock gets warm after a shot period of time, and hot if it is used for a longer length of time. Is this normal, or is it an indication of a problem?

518424 is the serial number. I am a new owner and a novice.

Well defIne warm. Can't keep your hand on the area or just warm. No hotter than your hand can stand. That said, what's warm exactly? The headstock itself or the spindle? It rotates 1.6xs the upper spindle.

The headstock housing is not warm, just the lower auxiliary spindle on the left side of the headstock. It gets warm enough that I can put my hand on it, but say to myself "Man, that is hot....why is it so hot, is it suppose to be that warm?"

Infra Red Temp Gun says 71 deg F before turning it on.

After 5 minutes on the C setting (band saw speed) it is 105 deg F.

After 7 minutes on C setting = 114 deg F.

After 10 Min. on C setting = 119 deg F.

5 more min on setting P-Q (table saw speed) = 153 deg F

(All of us would conclude that an object that is 153 degrees is hot to the touch.)

The housing temp rose to 90 deg F.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave.

Both the upper and lower aux spindles do have the drive hub installed. It sounds like mine is in the ball park then.

I just installed the PowerPro upgrade and after 30 minutes of pen turning and sanding and buffeting at speeds from 500 rpm up to 6,000 I noticed both of my hubs on the left side of the unit were fairly warm. Since everything is brand new I assumed that this is normal and due to belt friction.

With the PowerPro, I am not certain at all. The mechanical interface is a bit different and I expect that heating will differ as a result. Without that drive belt riding in a groove, friction factors are certainly different.

Less current required will also result in less heat.

That said, I would suggest that belt tension be checked. Improper belt tension can become a heat producing factor for the 510/520.

Poly-V belt tension

Check the upper drive belt (Gilmer or Poly-V) for proper tension. Too tight can cause the idler shaft and/or drive sleeve shafts to get quite hot. I try for about 1/8" deflection with moderate pressure from my finger.
