Auxiliary spindle shaft guard

I noticed installation instructions for the auxiliary spindle shaft guard. I don't have this guard on my SS. It seems like a good thing to have, safety wise. The part number shown is 521889, but that number is not listed in the catalog. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase this for older SS's? Mine was built in 1985.

Thanks for the info. The part # is the same as I posted above, which the SS site does not seem to recognize. Perhaps they changed the part #. I guess I'll call SS.

Shopsmith know the part is not available on the website, you can just all and speak to customer service. My question is does it fit on onl 500 motors on upgraded 520's. I don't think I have a hole in the motor for the screw.

A drill will take care of that. Hopefully they have instructions and a template for drilling.

They will when they sell it as an "upgrade" and I will be the first to but it. For now when I called they did not say they had it.

I know this post is 12 years old, but I got the spindle guard in yesterday, no hardware but I found instructions on line. The instructions clearly show holes already in the power head but mine will have to be drilled. I see from the instructions I need to buy 1/4" x 20 x 5/8" button-head screws with 5/32" allen heads, and 2 washers. My question is, should I drill and tap this area? The metal is pretty thin here, not sure a tap would hold. There are no instructions I could find for installing it into untapped metal.

I will be of no help and of no encouragement here at all.

I really do not see a need for the spindle guard. I would not drill into the headstock to install one if I had one.

I'm curious. Do the new headstocks come predrilled for this guard?

From what the instructions state, it would appear that way.

I have a new PP headstock and it came with the holes already in. I agree with Dusty, that thing was a pain so I sold the spindle guard. I would not drill into your headstock if I were you.
