I'm not JPG but I think I can answer that. It is the side with a steering wheel unless it s a driver's ed car in which case I don't know.:rolleyes:

References to the left or right side of the vehicle are oriented from the driver position facing forward. When I order parts this is how it is done here in the USA. If you need trim for the passengers side it will call it trim for the right side.

In post number one paul said he had the machine up side down. The third post he said he was looking from the power switch side.

Okay take something oblong in your hand and mark the right end and also the side facing you as PS for Power switch. Now turn the object upside down and turn it around until you see the side marked PS. If you flipped it end for end keeping the side marked PS facing you then the mark you made on the right side is now on your left.
If you roll it over then turn is so you can see the PS again the right side will now be on your left.

Gee Ed! You 'discovered' the reason for Paul's confusion.

The defined left/right do reverse visually. i.e. the lock end is normally to the operator's left. When inverted and again viewed from the switch side the lock end is on the right.(regardless of the method used to invert)

The instructions referred to the ends as left/right consistent with their apparent locations when upright. Thus the 'left' end is the 'lock' end even though it appears to the right when inverted.

Like the car, left/right are inconclusive so driver/passenger side is more accurate.

Curbside has a new set of ambiguity(Which side of the road are you parking on?:D)


I thought the car commonly used left/right were defined from the driver's perspective, but the front/rear bumper was a clearer example.


Now what makes a door right/left handed?:rolleyes:

You know understand my confusion, the good news is it appears not to matter since the new replacement parts are the same for both ends. Removing the headstock is not a good idea because you need it to hold the parts in alignement after you remove the ends.

The upgrade I did I only read the instructions once, left them in the house as it was clear I was not going to follow them. I don't have two people to do the flip so why fight it. I removed the headstock and carriage. Set up saw horses, set what was left of the machine on the horses and then turned it over.

Removed the legs and then the casters so I could paint the legs. While the paint was drying I came back flipped it over again then removed the way tubes from the hing side leaving the way tube bar in place so the tubes would not rotate. Set them aside for the moment and then removed one of the base assemblies off the bench tubes, the tube lock bar was very rusty so I wire brushed it clean and shot it with some paint. Put the new base parts in place and adjusted the tubes to the base to the correct insertion point. The other end was still holding the bench tubes so they did not rotate or do any other movements at all. Once that side was done I repeated the operation on the other side.

Flipped it over again and added the pivot arm to the side that had been the hinge side. Slid the way tubes in and lightly tighten them to keep the orientation then remove the tie bar and slid the other arm in place.

Now with both arms in place and attached I did the centering of the tubes.

When the paint was dry enough I remounted the casters to the legs as I had placed them at the removal side for each end. This kept them as I wanted them with the lever to the operator side of the machine.

Flipped the unit over so I could add the legs. Once in place I took it to the flat garage floor. Remounted the carriage and headstock, where I then tweaked the pivot locking parts for smooth easy lifts (a very minor adjustment). Sitting flat I then finished tighten the legs, center then sides. There was no difference in the caster operation, it was just like it was before all the changes.

I had marked the tubes with an orange china marker to make sure I had no rotation and I did not not. The whole process goes really fast if you are not waiting for paint to dry.

Not having to read the instructions the left/right/right/left issue was not an issue for me. The way shopsmith has been going with instructions of late (casters) I'm glad people are still able to put things together despite what they write.
