Spindle Turning

Here is a picture of an original spindle that I am trying to copy, and the glued up and trimmed oak wood made from two 3/4" strips:

Unfortunately now I am having more trouble. I got the Lathe Duplicator all set up on one of my Shopsmiths that I have just been using to power the belt sander only to discover that the headstock clamp on the way tubes has stopped working.

I got the headstock clamp cleaned out and now I am ready to mount my first spindle to be turned in the Shopsmith. Everything seems to be functional on the machine now.

And here is the new spindle! Along with one of the original spindles with the cut to fit railing end: I trimmed another one to use as the pattern for making the new one:

After much trouble trying to figure out how to set up the project, since the new spindle is longer than the old one which I had to trim off some to get a good square end to position it in the Lathe Duplicator. But I got it figured out and it went without a hitch. It took me about 2 hours to turn the first one here. But I took some breaks and found when I got past the smoother center part on one end I had a bad chattering problem. But after I sanded the center and installed the center bearing I got with the lathe duplicator I finished it up no problem. I used the triangular cutter all the way through not knowing what to do. But on my second trial I think I will use the round cutter to rough out the most material and then put in the triangular cutter to finish up the details. But it looks good after sanding it good on the Shopsmith. And I am sure my wife will be happy. The glue line didn't cause any difficulties and you can hardly see where it is on the finished one. And I will mount it on the side so you can't see it very well. Lets see, only 59 more to go!

I'm sure you'll pick up speed as you get more familiar with the process.
