Prayers For Theater Survivors
In the Denver area there is little else on TV the last two days than the aftermath of the horrid shooting situation at a theater in Aurora Colorado in the wee hours of Friday morning. I hope those given to do so will join me in prayers for the survivors those who lost lives and their loved ones. Local police and fire fighters also need our prayers. Jim

Yeah. That is mostly what they have been reporting on the news stations around here this weekend also. It is definitely a tragic situation. It makes you wonder what is going through the minds of these individuals to cause them to do these terrible acts. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Unfortunately when things like this happen, the politicians jump onto the bandwagon saying we need more stringent laws and regulations. Thus, meaning more control over everybody and less freedoms. Our Lt. Governor was on yesterday morning describing this incident along with the Fort Hood Shooting and the Shooting of the US Senator as being a wake-up call for tougher laws for gun sales/ownership.

I am against a chicken little response, but, who needs an assault rifle with 100+ magazine, and who needs to purchase thousands of rounds.dforeman wrote:Yeah. I do believe some purchase 'limits' need to be created and that goes for firearms as well(one or two at a time seems reasonable!)

As usual, this thread has gone from prayers to the need for assault weapons and large quanities of ammo. We can debate this until the fat lady sings, however, just why would anyone need or want an assult weapon with a large capacity magazine? Because someone in the shooting sports enjoys a powerful gun which can throw a maximum amount of lead down range to a target. Yup, this can be an assult rifle or a civilian weapon. The 2nd Ammendent says I (we) can enjoy that. There are people out there that do not enjoy ice skating and thoes who do not enjoy guns. But there are also people that do. The media has driven assult weapons down our throats but neglected to say that most any type of civilian rifle or pistol or revolver can inflict just as much damage in a theater as an assult weapon. The weapons do not kill people, people kill people wheather it be with knives, guns, poision or their bare fist. When are they going to strip us of knives? New laws? Heaven sakes, there are enough to go around the world three times over and they haven't even started to enforce the ones on the books now. There is a town outside of Atlanta, Ga. called Kennewaw. Everyone within it's boundaries is required to have a weapon in their homes. Guess what? No crime! No one talks about how many lives are saved because of guns. One thing I do need to know is that SS has given us this wonderful forum to talk about wood working and the SS itself. Why the need for talking about everything else. You can get on FB or a half dozen other social network sites or instant messaging sites and express yourself. Why does it have to happen here? The bright spot for today is that we have heard from Nick.
Goodness I am sorry to have begun this thread. I had hoped my thoughts might invoke caring for all involved in an awful situation. I apologize for my shortsightedness. Jim

Because this 'forum' bears the title 'Community' and is for discussion of any and everything!
I think you need to go read the second amendment! You are quoting it out of context.
I do not think 'self defense' includes the sport of throwing as much lead as possible down range.
Unless you are anticipating an invasion by scores of attackers I just do not see the need for that excessive magazine capacity.
Furthermore a rifle is just not a good weapon for close quarters.
I adamantly agree that any 'law abiding' citizen should be allowed to possess firearms, but lets get realistic.
There is an old tale regarding hearing shots during deer hunting season. Hear one shot, somebody bagged a deer. Hear two shots, somebody wounded a deer. Hear three shots, the deer got away. i.e. a bolt action rifle is all you need.
Finally, the second amendment says nothing about a right to play with firearms(sport), and has been interpreted to apply to self protection.
BTW, would that be Kennesaw, GA?
Finally Jim be not sorry for starting this thread. Your intentions were pristine and compassionate.
I contemplated starting a new thread - now I wish I had!:(
