Either way sorry to raise dumb questions. Jim
I guess I should point out that the floor has no seam in that area. If you are looking towards the outside the line you see is from the door closure and is discoloration.

I should also point out that you are seeing the machine repositioned for the pictures and up on the casters. For the actual measurements and testing the machine is off the casters and on the reasonably flat floor.

Hope this clears things up.

Double tilt upgrade from my perspective

Post by dusty »

Darn it!! Ed's report in this thread just makes me want the Double Tilt Upgrade just because it makes the overall alignment of tables so much more consistent.

I have long believed that my issues (as small as they were) were brought about by the Base/Base Arm Assembly(24) and the Headrest (13). I think Ed has proven that.

I am almost done doing the poor man's version of this at home, with a variation that IMHO makes the upgrade safer if you forget to tighten the new vertical lock knob. I'll post plenty of pictures once done (I need to make sure it works first:D )

Interesting side note:
The horizontal lock knob, to hold the shopsmith vertical after putting it in fill press mode, has been changed and quadrupled in price. Part #2 on the diagram (504293, $3.74) has been replaced by 522876, $12.49. When you add it to your cart it adds the new one but doesn't tell you until checkout.

I saw this and assumed that the new knob was the same as the new vertical lock knob of the double tilt. I thought it would then have 4 matching knobs (2 per side). It does not. The horizontal lock knob appears to be the same as before (I haven't done a side by side comparison yet). I need to call shopsmith to get a part # for the vertical lock knob. I thought I was buying a pair of "new" knobs. $25 for both and I still have to buy the ones I was originally looking for.

Dusty and the others that have put questions/comments to this thread you made this so much more interesting and informative.
Ed, YOU ARE THE BEST !
This thread with those pictures, Shopsmith should give you something. You are the best salesman they have.
I would give you a coupon worth a few hundred dollars for your next order.
I am convinced on the double tilt upgrade and hope to be able to order it on the next special. I wish those specials were available to us in Canada (hint to the powers that be at Shopsmith.) ..... soon I hope. I am sorry for adding this all the time, but I hope to rally some public support ....

I was able to acquire the adjustable collar through a nice member of this forum. But I should not have to be restricted to what All in one Tools is offering.

Those threads should be marked and assembled in a reference section on this forum.

Thanks again Ed and all of you guys.
You are this Forum's Treasure.

Does anyone know the specs for the new lock knobs that come with the double tilt? I'm looking for length, size, and pitch. I'm referring to the pair of knobs in the bottom center of the face.

I think it's a 3/8" x 16 thread which would be the same as the horizontal lock knob, are they the same?

When I saw this I got all excited again about the Double Tilt. Not because of the router/shaper features or anything like that. I got excited because of the improved alignment characteristics that I think can be expected.

I was so excited that I got out the "want list" to make sure I had it entered there. Whenever I order from Shopsmith, I scan the want list for little items that I might want to order to save on shipping.

Then I checked the latest online pricing for the double tilt kit. Ouch - that hurt. Three Hundred and Fifty smackers.

I can get that same stability with a second base arm assembly installed in lieu of the headrest assembly. I wouldn't be able to tilt but a have the shorty setup as a drill press so I don't need to tilt.
