Power for 10ER

I have a 10ER whose 1/2 horse orig motor bit recently the dust. I may be able to have it repaired , I can purchase a new/old motor, buy a new motor with variable speed and tach or can I change the headstock and control unit to a newer version. (will a MarkV unit or older Magna with a variable speed unit fit on the ways of the 10ER, etc??) Any suggestions appreciated.

The 10e and 10er have way tube spacing that is narrower than all the Mark xxx models.

IF it was me I wouldn't put too much into repairing an old motor (unless you want an all original museum piece) A new half horse motor is about 100 bucks from harbor freight, I'm sure if you looked around you could also find a good used motor for much less.

You will need a 1725-1750 RPM motor for the 10ER. I would recommend a reversible motor to which you can add a simple FWD/REV switch and wire. A new example can be found at http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?i ... 2&catname= for less than $135. I recommend a 3/4 or 1 HP single phase motor with a 56 frame. A TEFC motor prevents sawdust & dirt from getting inside the motor. You will need to make sure there is no capacitor case or protrusion on top of the motor or you will have to cut out a hole on the bench to allow for this or raise the 10ER on the bench.

Variable speed motors will be more expensive. A DC motor/controller or a 3 phase motor/controller I believe is overkill and too expensive for this Shopsmith model.

... unless you find a FREE treadmill in your area. Generally more powerful motors, with a speed controller built-in. Might take some electronic hacking to get the speed up, though.

That's a good one Bill. 3 years ago, a guy was selling 1.5 HP DC motors out of heavy duty treadmills for $90 which included a pulse width modulator (PWM) for speed control. The cool thing about these motors were they fit the 10E/ER motor plate perfectly.
