Yesterday, my dad gave me a... plank... of Cedar that someone had given him. It is actually two pieces screwed along the length at an angle. Dad has no idea what purpose it served the previous owner. I thought this might make a good seat for the bench. Mocking it up, I'm just not sure I like it very much. I just don't think the 2 pieces work well together.

Opinions? Any ideas on how to make it work better? Is there any way these two pieces could work together?
Some questions about each piece.
The cedar was finished on only one side. The other side wasn't touched. And it has a bunch of holes and rot? areas.

The underside is even worse.

I'm thinking maybe I should fill and seal these with some epoxy?
The footboard was an antique when I was a little kid and my grandma was using it as a headboard on the bed I slept on when I visited. I needs to be refinished, but I'm afraid of damaging it. It has several layers of paint (the top one a pretty rough paint job). I don't know how I would sand it without sanding away some of the detail in the curves. But just spraying it with my air compressor has exposed bare wood in some places.

What is the best approach to take with this? CitruStrip, a 3M pad, and a fresh coat of paint? Intricate and careful sanding and staining?
