carbide blade sharping experiance?

Post by sailseahawk »

Hello,
Can anyone recommend a company for sharpening a carbide tip saw blade?

I have numerous good to very good quality carbide blades that have seen a lot of use. I'm tired of buying new, and would prefer to sharpen.

There is another similar thread from earlier that mentions "Total saw solutions", but does not state if they personally had success.

Looking for a recommendation for a company that one of y'all have personally used.

Thanks,
Jeff

Here is another interesting Nick Engler video to explain all the Shopsmith table saw blades.

Hope it helps.

I don't your location, but I've been slowly getting my blades and yardsale finds sharpened by a local shop. Best advise I got was to find one that's been around for a while. A sharp blade makes a world of difference.

Unless you are into mail order and dealing with companies remotely I would suggest you check locally for a blade sharpener. In Tampa we have Roberts Saw that does an absolutely excellent job but I have got to believe that there are many equally talented blade sharpeners out there.

Make sure where ever you take it that they have the ability to install missing carbide teeth. Roberts Saw inspects the blade and identifies any cracked, missing or chipped teeth that need to be replaced. They also custom build Bandsaw blades.

Personally I like being able to talk directly to the person sharpening my blades. I can convey problems I'm having and many times they are able to put another cut on my blade teeth that solve my problem.

Once you get them talking they often give up tips and secrets they have learned through the years that may benefit you and your wood working.

Try this site for sharpening. Price does not include shipping.

Just ran across this from another source:

I spent over 10 years running a sharpening shop and know that precision is very important. On the carbide blades you don’t have “set” to worry about but both the face and the top need to be sharpened. If you don’t have the tops the same height some teeth will be just going around for the ride and not doing any work. Like anything else, IF you know what you are doing, have the right equipment, etc. you can probably do a serviceable job but probably leave the sharpening to the professional. For cleaning blades I used lye water for an overnight soak and washed off with hot water. But, for a cleaner that has lye in it and does a great job of cleaning saw blades, chainsaw chains, etc. use SuperClean.

I would caution anyone buying any saw blade sharpening equipment to make sure you can get a refund and know how many days you have to return the equipment. Also if any reduction in the refund price is applyed when the equipment is returned.

I would recommend to immediately sharpen several saw blades and then test each one to determine if the results are satifactory. If not, return the equipment.

I purchased a Foley BelSaw Saw Blade sharpener many years ago. I found I needed to have quite a bit of knowledge and understanding to properly sharpen a saw blade. I seem to remember that it took difficult setups and quite a few passes on different areas of each saw tooth to just sharpen one saw blade. It is much more difficult than I originally believed. I was never happy with my resullts so I finally sold the equipment and had a local person sharpen my saw blades.

I believe the Harbor Freight chain saw sharpener might be a good buy as there are only 2 places that need to be ground.

I have two blades (both are NOT China made) that are either going to be put aside and replaced or sharpened. My options are to buy new ones ($20 after 20% discount from Harbor Freight + tax) or $20 plus shipping from the above company.

Does anyone have experience with Harbor Freight blades. http://www.harborfreight.com/10-inch-40-tooth-carbide-tipped-circular-saw-blade-with-titanium-nitride-coating-93893.html. Some of their stuff is really good and some is really crap. I mean, really, really crap. Just try to get it replaced when it breaks.

Those of you who have had experience with this blade from HF or who have experience with professionally sharpened blades will provide a service to many of us.

Like Moggymatt, I have been geting my blades sharpened at a local shop. If you Google "sharpening servervice (your city and state)", it will bring up a list of shops.
