SS user with an axe to grind
So I did. I attached a 8" metal grinding wheel on my dado 5/8" arbor, put the lathe tool rest on the other side and sharpened my axe to fine new bevel after using it to cut roots out of the ground from an annoying oleander bush. Revitalized my lathe tools too. Probably been 20 years since someone put an edge to them. Gonna take them to a stone later once I find a decent set of wet stones.
I'm either stupid, creative or just plain cheap. I'll let you decide.

I think I read somewhere that you are still wet behind the ears.pinochi73 wrote:So I did. Do be careful when grinding to protect the way tubes from the debris and headstock sliding surface.

I have become very fond of wheels like this for grinding mower blades, axes and similar tools. Fast removal of material, stays fresh even after wear and I believe safer from breakage at high RPM. Of course you have to buy decent ones, some of the really cheap ones have a short life. Some of the mid priced ones will wear very well indeed.

This one is about a 4" wheel but they come in a number of sizes.
