Headstock won't run

Post by acisnero »

I was running my shaper and heard a sound. I can hear the motor hum but nothing moves. Any ideas? What do I check? How do I check it?

It was running, you were shaping and heard something and now it just hums.

The fact that it hums can be a positive sign but don't let it hum for long. Doing so may result in smoke. The hum is the motor trying to turn (drawing current). Too much current results in heat, results in damage, results in a new motor.

Can you turn the drive shaft by hand.

Did anything else dramatic happen at the time it quit running? I'm thinking something stopped the rotation suddenly.

It sounded like rubber rubbing on metal.

I can't turn the drive shaft full turn by hand. Nothing else happened when it stopped running.

Pull the cover off and check the drive belt. It may be worn and jammed. You may be able to see what the problem is. If you remove the belt and it still hums then blow all the dust out of the motor (do that anyway). Sometimes that will get it running again. If that doesn't work you may need to have it repaired/rebuilt. Don't do that locally as they will usually rip you off. Contact Simon Eng in Anaheim Hills, CA. He rebuilds these for I think $70.

Thank you for your suggestions. It was a worn out motor drive belt. Thanks again!

Replace it with a link belt (harbor freight belts are cheaper and seem to have no problems). You can't use these on Mark VIIs.
