Double bearing quill

I have a 1981 Mark V and it has a double bearing quill. The problem is that the rear bearing is only two inches deep. According to Nick's assesment of the quill, the bearing in the rear of the quill needs to be six inches deep. The quill shaft has to up and down movement to it also. Should I leave it alone or will it affect the performance of the headstock? Thanks for your help in advance.

The 1981 models did not come equipped with a 2 bearing quill. So if your machine is in fact a 1981 then the quill has been updated. SS had several versions of the 2 bearing quill also.
As for the up and down play you should check the position of the knurled nut on the quill housing. Loosen the set screw and push the nut against the front bearing and tighten the screw. This may take out the play. If not then it may be time to put new bearings in the quill. Additionally. the set screw on the knurled nut should line up with the flat on the quill shaft where the saw blade arbor set screw tightens onto the quill shaft. If it is not lined up then the knurled nut has slipped and should be reset.

Single bearing quills have a washer that may make ya believe that ya have a 2 bearing quill.

Bob, you were right it was a washer. Is there anyway to convert this quill to a two bearing quill without replacing the whole quill? thanks

Talk to Bill Mayo. Wasn't he looking for some single bearing quills that he was willing to swap out for two bearing quills?

Based on your post count you are most likely new to here, but Bill is an all around good guy and if he doesn't have all the single quills he needs, you might be able to work something with him.

Yes, I'm pretty new to this forum. I have had a SS since 2007. I'm planning on selling the 81'. Thought, maybe the two bearing quill might bring more $. This is the first time I tore a head stock down. I was cleaning it up and wanted to find out if maybe it was a two bearing. I lubed the sheaves and clean it up pretty good. I've never tore my 95' down this far. Thanks for your help. I'm sure 95' could use a good cleaning.

Where are you located? If in Virginia I would machine it for you. Don't obsess over the 2 bearings though. The single will work fine for woodworking. I've added multiple bearings to a single bearing quill with no gain after the second bearing. Now, the real modification would be to go to angular contact bearings...but that's a whole other level.

Thanks for the referral. I am still looking for single bearing quills.

My machinist has machined a few single bearing Gilmer and Poly-V housing and quill shafts for me so they will accept a second bearing. I will be picking them up in 2 weeks and have them available after assembling and testing for any runout. I will be listing them on Ebay once this is done.
