Any ideas on the original purpose of this table/stand?

Post by bffulgham »

A friend of mine and his wife took a weekend trip into New Hampshire (I think that's what I remember he said....). They bought this table or stand.
It's about 24" wide 14" deep and maybe 26" tall.
It is oak.
The shelves (racks) slide forward from the base.
There are no maker's marks or labels. They said it was horribly dried out and dirty, but cleaned up nicely using Murphy's.

Any ideas of it's original function or purpose? I don't have a clue....

Cooling rack for loaves of French bread, or something similar? Looks like ca. 4" between racks/shelves.

It's a taco shell shaping and cooling station. After the shells are fried, they are hung on the racks until cool. :D

All 5 'racks' move? All 5 racks have 3 knobs(originally)?

I do not have a clue either!:D

May have something to do with textiles.

I'm with Gary. Looks like a baker's rack to me. Many of the spacers appear to be missing. Easy fix, though.

What are the 3 knob sets in the 'rear' for?

A baker's rack, maybe, but I think that the solid top may trap too much heat and humidity for it be effective. I vote for a drying rack for some sort of specific item. Possibly women's handkerchiefs.
Would make a nice and unusual wine rack.:D

Textiles is the key word. It is a storage rack used to hold full bobbins. Nice find.
