Horizontal boring
Well, I tried to use the horizontal boring setup tonight and the away side of the rip fence was slipping. I read the setup procedures tonight and tomorrow I will try to adjust the settings. I guess if that doesn't work a block on the back side clamped to the table is the right answer.

It would seem the rear fence clamp is not 'tight' enough.mgbbob wrote:Well, I tried to use the horizontal boring setup tonight and the away side of the rip fence was slipping. The 510(and I believe the 520) fences are adjustable at the rear clamp end on the 'connecting' rod.
The 500 merely requires additional rotation of the clamp knob.

I too think you have the fence adjustment loose. My 510 locks tight. I would suggest mounting a sacrifical wood plank to the fence so that you don't bore into your nice metal fence. It also makes it easier to screw in a few stopblocks to hold the work.

I have a sacrificial board attached. Bit is sharp and I am not over forcing the bit. I am sure I have an adjustment problem with the fence. I will go through the procedure tonight. I am sure the election results will go on without me for a while! I will let everyone know what I find.

My 510 fence has an adjustment nut on the back end. When I drop the lever the fence feels tight enough to work with, then I tighten the wing to make it secure and solid. Guess what I'm trying to say, probably using the wrong nomenclature, is the lever is adjusted tight enough that it holds the fence in place all by itself.

Unless you have one of the new upgraded 500 fences with the lever. Then I believe, the rear clamp adjustment is also on the rear of the fence like the 510/520 and current SS bandsaw fence.JPG40504 wrote:It would seem the rear fence clamp is not 'tight' enough.

Fence fixed
I went through the adjustment on the fence and all is well. The back nut needed about 1/4 turn and the rest was pretty good.
Did my first borings and realized I failed to check the table to arbor adjustment. Second attemt was successful.
I am building doors for my garden shed with 1/2" doweled corners. Mainly a learning process but the first mockup indicates a nice tight joint. Tomorrow night I will build door two and install the framing for the windows.
The machine does a great job of horizontal boring once the idiot flipping the switch figures the geometery out.
