What to do with 500 leftovers from 520 upgrade?

Post by chrispitude »

Hi all,

I have lots of bits and pieces left over from my recent 520 upgrade. I posted them in a craigslist posting:

http://allentown.craigslist.org/tls/603858649.html

Is $75 too little? Too much?

I didn't post them on Ebay because I figured the shipping would be prohibitive for lots of big metal items. (Hmm, I could probably Ebay off the saw arbors.) Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can sell or get rid of these parts so that someone else gets some use out of these bits? Does anyone here want any of these pieces? My local dump takes scrap metal for free, but I hate to do that. I've seen some nifty uses for the old items from other folks here, but for my purposes, all of it can go.

How did you get rid of your bits and pieces after your Shopsmith upgrade?

One more time.....Drop down here on this Beginning Forum and see what you can do with that old carriage and table......See Mark V 500 carriage....

Do this and you'll find use for those old accessories like the miter gauge and fence......I have....

Why are you dumping those arbors? Save for when you get a bargain on other blades....And that old blade can be resharpened.....

But...be yourself....

Make something out of them! They belong in the shop where they originated.

Take a look at this. This is NOT my idea; it belongs to Doc (chiroindixon). I only got involved to try to resolve a photo posting dilemma.

I agree with the others, you can find great ideas on here on how to use all your items! But if you want to sell them, ebay is the way to go. I see those items all the time. Buyer pays shipping and the Priority Flat Rate for boxes at the post office is a deal. Check out ebay, do a search for shopsmith and you will see all the items, usually posted separately and the various shipping charges. I just got a nice jointer for my SS for only $100.

Hi guys,

Much of this stuff is stuff I can't use. I'm already keeping all the arbors and bits that are useable. 500 saw blade arbors are too short for the 520's lower guard. The sanding disk plate is also incompatible. The auxiliary table top has no legs (they get reused for the new table) and I have outboard roller stands and the Shopsmith infeed/outfeed table brackets. I have an extra miter rail which came with the 520, so I don't need the old miter rail or miter gauge (which has seen better days). I've kept all the things that I can (or want to) reuse. The question is, what do I do with the rest? :)

You guys are handy and have done some really creative and impressive things with those old pieces. My needs are far more modest. Plus, to be honest, my feelings would not be hurt if I never saw my old 500 table again... or its table inserts... or its fence that has about 10 degrees of variation from day to day...

I think I am going to pull the craigslist ad and post each item on Ebay and see what happens. I appreciate everyone's feedback!

I guess I know how you feel.

When I had my second set of knee replacements put in, the doctor asked if I wanted him to keep the original titanium set so that I could see what they looked like. I had asked to see them before the initial surgery but things got hectic and he wasn't able to bring them to me.:(

No, hell no. I no longer want to even think about that first set. The problems I had with them I just want to forget.

Spare parts

Post by jbemis »

I am in the process of rebuilding a 70's era Mark V. The only portion of the worktable assembly that survived was the table surface.

Going to SS for replacement parts is difficult because rear trunions are no longer made. I have gotten everything else for the assembly but that specific part.

After bidding o ebay for a worktable assembly and winning, I have a "replacement" assembly. It is a bit oxidize and rusty but it has a rear trunion. Tomorrow I will try to put it all together.

Send those spare parts to the beginners area, please.

In checking the bench base assembly, I found I am missing both of the Accessory Mount Locks. Are these easy to place into the bench base? I am ordering the parts from SS in he morning.

I appreciate all the experinece that comes out in the discussions.

Welcome to the forum, jbemis,

Yes, the Accessory Mount Locks are very straightforward to install. The main thing to optimize this job is to rotate/align each of them (stud vs outer handle) during installation so that when you are doing a real tigthen-down, the 2 ends gripping your tailstock or accessory are doing so symmetrically. (Otherwise you might have 1 tight 1 loose and not have the best stability.)

Enjoy,
Chris
