I am running Firefox version 17.0 right now with no problem at all.
I never had any problem with Firefox since I decided to use it about 5 or 6 years ago ...
Oh ... I forgot to say, I am on a MacPro and OS X. In the 10 to 12 years I have been on Mac and OS X, I can count on the fingers on ONE hand having to reboot, that's not bad. I like it ! No hassle, no problem at all. It could be compare in pricing to choosing a Shopsmith vs a copy, the price is much higher but it keeps on going ....
Sorry Dusty, I know that does not help you at all, but I could not resist bragging a bit about my non-Window system.
MacPro are Intel base computer onto which I could run Window in parallel with OS X but why should I ... ?

I understand the sweet taste of success. I just have not beed extremely successful of late. However, I do not believe that my current problem can be laid on Firefox. I believe that ist is something that has happened within my computer (rights, privileges, etc).

Firefox and Windows 7 work fine except that I can not activate Firefox as the User. I must come in as the Administrator. Firefox inaccurately reports that Firefox is still running when I know it is not per (Task Manager, Processes and Applications).

Hope you find the solution .... it is frustrating to not be able to operate a system, that is suppose to work for you, not the opposite.
Anyway, sorry I could not help you and my bragging did not help either for your spirit, but you will prevail with time.

I don't want to speak too loudly or too quickly but it seems that my computer problems have all disappeared. Notice I said disappeared and not resolved.

It is as though I had gremlins that got bored and moved on.

As I worked on this problem (for three days I think) it just seemed to get worse. Yes, I might have been a part of that because I did make some changes that I did not fully understand.

Then one morning (Monday I think) when I turned on the computer everything was working. In fact, it seems to be faster as well as functional.

The only real change that I can attest to is the fact that I am now not operating as the Administrator. I created a User account and that is where I log in.

I suppose that could effect procedures at log on (I no longer have to "Run as Administrator") but it should have nothing to do with my access to Microsoft Office documents. And then why the difference from one day to the next. One day it doesn't work, I get frustrated and shut down and then the next day when I log on everything is working.

I do see some differences in the "Rights and Privileges" which I understand effects accessibility BUT I made no changes. Why did they occur?

Both of my daughters who are IT wizards in their own right have been involved and they can offer no explanation.

The one negative that I still have to grapple with is Facebook. I now have two FB accounts. That must have some basis in the fact that I created a new user account but I don't understand why or how to delete the unwanted account. One of the grand kids or daughters will have to get involved with this.

BTW In the midst of this ordeal, the Microsoft Troubleshooting Wizard was out to lunch (inoperative). It works now.

I would like to ask a simple, for me, question??

Is there an advantage to having two internet applications?? does firefox or mozilla have some things IE doesn't or cant do as good???

just trying to understand??

I actually use 4 they all render html slightly differently.
Chrome(default) it's the fastest and has the debugging tools I use most

IE (Testing and development and the occasional site I have to visit that still requires IE)

Firefox (More advanced debugging tools available for testing and development)

Safari (Testing only)

Really starting to hate web development

If there is a significant difference, other than ease of use, I don't know what it is. Then some people surely think IE is easier to use than Firefox. It all comes down to personal preference.

Now there was a time when my IE was very, very slow and I could not get anyone to do anything about it. At that time, I paid for IE on a separate contract account.

We have since bundled and I no longer have the account that provided me with IE. Besides, the IE browser is now free as is Firefox.

Others will chime in here, I am sure, and tell us their browsers are just as good or better and they too are free. Like I said, it is all just personal preference. Hmmm, the area in which you live may have some impact.

Debugging tools, what debugging tools? Are there online tools that might have helped me last week?:(

I can't think of any that would have helped your specific issue. I use Firebug for javascript debugging and several other firefox plugins that essentially deconstruct a page by element so I can how things are rendered.

Chrome has the Web Developer extension which also provides debugging and page analysis, but firebug is a bit more user friendly.

There are debugging tools for IE, but I really don't care for them.

Safari is used strictly as a visual inspection check to ensure elements we want rendered show up as expected and everything functions as desired.

As far as windows updates go. Typically these are issued the second Tuesday of each month. (That doesn't always mean they're installed, just made available for installation.) I do encourage everyone to keep their OS patched and anti-virus up to date. Yes even Mac and Linux users should have anti-virus installed and kept current. That whole "I have a Mac so I'm immune" is not true anymore. Malicious Software writers are very creative.
